Mitch Leidner: From 7th Grade B Team to Gopher Hero

The Lakeville South standout set a University of Minnesota scoring record Saturday and told the Big Ten Network the upcoming Iowa game is "huge."

Mitch Leidner set a University of Minnesota record Saturday by scoring four rushing touchdowns to lead the Golden Gophers past San Jose State

Leidner graduated from Lakeville South High School in 2011 and holds the school's record for single-game touchdown passes (six). His brother Matt, a freshman also from Lakeville South, plays center for the Gophers.

Leidner, a red-shirt freshman who earned the Big Ten's Freshman of the Week, was interviewed by the Big Ten Network, and his background in Lakeville came up. When did he first play QB?

"I played quarterback I think in seventh grade on the B team," Leidner said, recalling getting to play the position "because I can throw the farthest on the team."

About the game next Saturday, Leidner was asked: "Growing up in Lakeville, Minnesota, how important is it to you to beat Iowa?"

"It's huge," Leidner said.
