New Lakeville Police Chief Comes From Edina
Edina Police Chief Jeff Long will start his new position in January.
Edina Police Chief Jeff Long has accepted the Lakeville police chief position, the city of Lakeville announced on Monday.
Long was one of three finalists for the position, which opened after former Lakeville Police Chief Thomas Vonhoff retired on Oct. 1. Sgt. John Kornmann has served as interim police chief since Vonhoff's retirement.
"Jeff brings many years of experience and successful management in a suburban public safety setting,” Lakeville City Administrator Steve Mielke said in a statement from the city. “He’s a proven leader and we look forward to working with him.”
Long has served as the Edina police chief for nearly four years. He began his law enforcement career as a community enforcement officer in 1987. He has moved through the ranks and taken on several assignments in the Edina Police Department.
Long has a diverse background in operations, including tactics, management, and community policing, according to the city.
"Chief Long’s ability to build relationships and rapport within his department as well as in the community, were qualities we looked for,” said Mayor Matt Little in the city's statement. “He has a track record of partnering with the community and pro-active approaches to law enforcement.”
In Edina, Long oversees a department of 51 sworn officers and 24 non-sworn staff. Lakeville has 53 sworn officers and 11 non-sworn staff.
Long is expected to begin his duties Jan. 20.
