Mary Liz Holberg: Gun Control Bills Generate Strong Opposition

"Between e-mails and phone contacts I have heard from nearly 200 residents of my district."

Editor's note: The following is a newsletter from Lakeville's State House Representative Mary Liz Holberg, R-Lakeville. Most Popular Constituent Contact Issue This Week - Gun Control Bills This week, the Public Safety Committee took testimony on various gun control proposals. For three days, there have been hundreds of citizens in the building showing their strong opposition to the bills being considered. Citizens began arriving at 7 am to try to get into the hearings that began at 10 am. The hearing room was packed each day as well as multiple overflow rooms that were set up so that citizens could listen to the testimony. Between e-mails and phone contacts I have heard from nearly 200 residents of my district. They are overwhelmingly …

Obama in Minneapolis: Gun Control is About Saving Lives

President called on voters to pressure their legislators to pass gun control measures.

Speaking to a crowd of local dignitaries and law enforcement officers on Monday, President Barack Obama called on voters to pressure Congress to act on curbing gun violence. "We've suffered too much pain to stand by and do nothing," he said.  "We don't have to agree on everything to agree it's time to do something," he added. What did the Twin Cities think about Obama's visit on social media? Adopting universal background checks, banning military-style assault weapons, limiting ammunition magazines to 10 rounds, and putting more police officers on the street are "common sense," bipartisan measures to reduce gun violence, the President said. He also repeated other proposals to expand access to mental health care for young people. Several …

The Minnesota Model for background checks works: there is no need to change it. The "assualt weapon" terminology is third riech propoganda: sadly it worked in the 1930's and is thrown before us again. A lie is a lie is a lie. Pompous political asses can prop it, spice it, speak it loudly, speak it often but it is neo-fascist mind contol. I would remind readers and officials our constitution is …   more ›

Explainer: Why President Obama Chose to Come to Minneapolis

President Barack Obama will visit Minneapolis on Monday to meet with law enforcement and community members to discuss gun control measures nationwide.

President Barack Obama will visit Minneapolis on Monday to meet with local officials about gun violence, less than two months after the December shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, CT that claimed the lives of 20 children and six school staffers. The day trip will be the president’s first one outside Washington to discuss his “common-sense” plan to combat gun violence, introduced on January 16 and reiterated a few days later in his weekly video address to the nation (see above). The visit follows his promises to heavily involve communities in tackling this issue. “Everything we do combines both a legislative strategy with a broad-based communications and outreach strategy to get people engaged and involved, so that it's not …

Patch Poll

Patch Poll: Professor Says Newtown May be a Conspiracy. Do You Agree?

Florida professor James Tracy has said the devastating shooting in Newtown, CT, was part of a government and media conspiracy related to gun control.

On Jan. 10, Lakeville Patch brought you the heart-warming story of Holly Ryan, a school psychologist at Kenwood Trail Middle School who traveled back to her hometown of Newtown, CT, to help victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy. The story proved that those December events will forever resonate with folks, not only in Lakeville, but around the world. So much so, people on the other side of the fence are sharing their voice, and it's causing a whole new host of problems for Newtown victims. Florida Atlantic University Professor James Tracy has vocally questioned whether Sandy Hook has even happened. Tracy has said he believes that the school shooting could have been a performance by people he called "crisis actors." The reason…

Dakota County Sheriff Dave Bellows: Ban High-Capacity Assault Weapons

Also, Sen. Al Franken will be at Dakota County school on Monday to discuss school safety.

Dakota County Sheriff Dave Bellows said yesterday that he supports a ban on the sale of high-capacity assault weapons. "I believe in the second amendment,” Bellows told Patch Friday morning, three weeks to the day after the Newtown, CT, massacre in which 20 children were killed. “I’ve signed, over the years, 9,000 permits to carry" firearms. “But does the second amendment extend all the way to assault weapons and high-capacity magazines?" Bellows asked. "I don’t think it does.”  On a separate but related note, Sen. Al Franken announced Friday that he will be at Eagan's Dakota Hills Middle School on Monday to meet "with several Minnesota educators, child advocates, and school-safety officials to discuss ongoing efforts to improve school …

Actually he's an elected Sheriff I do believe so him expressing his opinions is good I think. He signed my permit to carry also but now he wants to take away the gun I carry and pretty much any hand gun I could carry cause the laws that are being proposed would ban revolvers and semi auto's with 10 or more capacity. So the next time he's up for election I think I might have to look to his …   more ›

What Issues Should the Minnesota Legislature Focus on in 2013?

With so many challenges on the table, Patch wants to know what issues you think are most important.

With another legislative session just around the corner, senators and representatives have no shortage of challenges ahead of them. Lawmakers plan to convene hearings on gun control in the wake of the school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, CT. They’ll review a recommendation from a governor-appointed task force to increase gas taxes and tab fees in response to a projected $50 billion shortfall in transportation funding. The DFL majority and defeat of the marriage amendment in the 2012 election could even prompt the Legislature to take up the issue of gay marriage. And looming over everything is a projected $1.1 billion deficit that legislators will have to close before adjourning for the year. With so many issues on the …

Sheriff Questions State's Laws as Gun Permit Requests Soar in Dakota County

Dakota County Sheriff Dave Bellows said Thursday that Minnesota’s permit-to-carry law allows some people with serious mental health issues to acquire firearms.

Like us on Facebook | Follow us on Twitter | Sign up for our newsletter In the days after the Newtown, CT, shooting, Dakota County has seen a big uptick in applications for permits to carry a pistol. Dakota County Sheriff Dave Bellows said the county received 30 requests Monday and 26 Tuesday—about three times higher than the seven-10 applications processed in a typical day. "We have the staff to handle" the upsurge in applications, Bellows said. But what does worry him is the fact that some of the people applying for permits may have serious mental-health issues. And under current law, there's nothing he can do about it. “Since 2008, we’ve seen a significant increase from year to year, and this year is going to be the highest year ever,” …
