Sen. Dan Hall: Concern Over E-Pull Tabs Grows

Hall: "As widely reported, initial pull tab revenue for FY 2013 was projected to be $35 million, while updated projections have been scaled back to $1.8 million, a 95 percent reduction."

The following is a column from Sen. Dan Hall, D-District 56.   E-pull tabs, Budgets, and Taxes  Bipartisan concerns continue at the Capitol over the growing gap between initial and updated projections of electronic pull tab revenue—which is a key funding source for the new Vikings stadium. During this week’s inaugural hearing of the Legislative Commission on Minnesota Sports Facilities, members of both parties called for an expedited hearing on why Governor Dayton’s revenue projections have so far been significantly off the mark. As widely reported, initial pull tab revenue for FY 2013 was projected to be $35 million, while updated projections have been scaled back to $1.8 million, a 95 percent reduction.  Officials from the Minnesota …

We need more involved in having E tabs. VFW and Eagles have pull tabs and bingo. Work with them. I like both. Can't make money with 2 bars in St. Paul and have to look them up on the internet. Where's Margaret Thatcher for Minnesota?   more ›

Lakeville's Loeffler a Partner, Not a Bidder on Vikings Stadium

While flattered to be named as a bidder, Loeffler Construction President and Co-Owner Doug Loeffler says the Lakeville firm hopes to be part of the new Minnesota Vikings stadium project only as a partner.

Loeffler Construction is growing—no doubt about that. And the Lakeville-based firm's President and Co-Owner Doug Loeffler acknowledges building the Minnesota Vikings Stadium would be pretty great. But recent media reports—including one found here on Lakeville Patch (published Jan. 15)—are a bit inaccurate, he said. "It's flattering—the reports, but we cannot build it, or portray to build it alone," Loeffler said. "What we are doing ... we’re teamed with Gilbane Building Companies out of Rhode Island. They’re a very large firm that's built other stadiums, and they reached out to us and asked to be a local partner." Loefller said his firm would be supporting Gilbane, helping them learn the marketplace and help work with the subcontractor …

Lakeville Construction Firm Bids on Vikings Stadium Project

Loeffler Construction of Lakeville is one of six contenders vying for the $975 million stadium deal.

A Lakeville construction company could become the lead contractor on the "People's Stadium," a controversial new venue for the Vikings in downtown Minneapolis.  Lakeville's Loeffler Construction is one of six firms shortlisted for the project, which is expected to run from $675 million to $975 million. Two other Twin Cities companies are contending for the contract, Kraus-Anderson and Mortenson Construction. The project has also attracted three other firms from out of state: Gilbane Building Companies of Rhode Island, Skanska of New Jersey and Hunt Construction of Arizona. The Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority released the list on Friday. The MSFA's final selection will be announced on Feb. 1. Construction of the stadium is expected to…

Dakota County Morgue's Move Could Hinge on Vikings Stadium Plan

Dakota County's focus has shifted to negotiations with Hennepin County to partner with them on morgue and medical examiners services.

Editor's Note: Dakota County Commissioner Tom Egan represents Mendota Heights, Lilydale, Mendota and a portion of Eagan. He was elected to office in 2004 and is now serving his second four-year term. The days when Dakota and the other seven counties of the Minnesota Regional Medical Examiner's Office (MRMEO) conduct morgue and medical examiners services out of the cramped, windowless 4,000 square feet of basement space in the Regina Medical Center in Hastings may soon be over.   Early last year, I reported that Dakota County was exploring its options for morgue and medical examiner's services because we were busting out of the seams in the space provided at Regina.   After an exhaustive analysis by Dakota County staff, we believe we may …

(POLL) Are You Happy to See the Vikings Get a New Stadium?

The plan was approved by the Senate on Thursday.

With Senate approval coming on Thursday by a 36-30 vote, a new Minnesota Vikings stadium is on its way. After plenty of twists and turns throughout the legislative session, debate intensified this week, as the House and Senate both held several late-night sessions to discuss the bill. All that remains now is a signature from Gov. Mark Dayton, who has been an ardent stadium supporter. Dayton is holding a press conference at 5:45 p.m. today with stadium bill authors, Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak and team owner Zygi Wilf, and Dayton could sign the bill then. The new stadium will cost roughly $975 million, with the team slated to pay a little less than half. The state will pay about $348 million by expanding gambling. The city of Minneapolis …

No. Bad timing. Also a lot of people cannot afford to go to a Vike's game. 5 years from now they will be whining about something else and they will want another new Stadium.   more ›

Dave Thompson obviously feels he was elected so he could vote for what HE believes in, thinks and feels. It's what HE WANTS/NEEDS.......he doesn't have any one of his constiuients in mind when votes on anyhing. When was the last time he uttered the words "the majority of the people that I represent feel they want / need or they don't want / need" ???? I don't give 2 cents what Dave believes, …   more ›

With Session Still Grinding Along, House Reaches Per Diem Budget

Reps. Mary Liz Holberg and Pat Garofalo will both receive more than than the budgeted $5,412 this session.

Minnesota's House is still in session, flying past a self-imposed April 30 deadline to wrap up business. And as a result, House members have received more for per diem—the daily expense payments local representatives receive—than the legislature had budgeted for 2012. Reps. Mary Liz Holberg (R-District 36A), of Lakeville, and  Pat Garofalo (R-District 36B), Farmington, were slated to get $5,412 this session in per diem payments. Garofalo is also scheduled to receive $528 extra dollars incurred from last year's special session. Holberg will receive $264 extra per diem dollars. The House, for 2012, budgeted $663,095 for per diem, and as of May 2, had already spent $669,257, according to the Star Tribune. House Republican spokesman Jodi Boyne…

Vikings Stadium Bill Nearly Dead; What's Your Take?

After a new stadium bill was defeated in a House committee, a team spokesperson said "this sends a strong message to the Vikings and the NFL.” What do you think it means for the Vikings franchise?

A “hail mary” pass may be about the only chance the Minnesota Vikings have left to get a stadium bill passed this session. The House Government Operations and Elections Committee failed to approve a bill that calls for funding a new stadium that would house the NFL team. The vote was 9-6 with five Democrats and four Republicans voting against the plan. Five Republicans and one DFLer voted in favor. State Reps Mary Liz Holberg (R-District 36A) of Lakeville, and Pat Garofalo (R-District 36A) of Farmington, as well as State Sen. Dave Thompson (R-District 36) of Lakeville, have all expressed being against the bill—HF2810—which calls a for a $975 million fixed-roof stadium to be built on the Metrodome site. The team would cover $427 million of …

Garofalo: Budget Forecast, Paying Back Schools

State Rep. Pat Garofalo (R-District 36B) of Farmington's most recent newsletter.

Editor's note: State Rep. Pat Garofalo (R-District 36B), of Farmington, represents a portion of Lakeville. This is his most recent newsletter. BUDGET IMPROVES - MY PLAN TO PAY BACK SCHOOLS The February budget forecast showed an improvement in our state's fiscal situation.  Because of this improvement the state will have over $1 billion dollars cash on hand and will automatically pay back the debt to schools by $318 million dollars.  I think it's reasonable that the state use some of the extra cash on hand to further pay down this debt to our schools.  I introduced a bill last week to reduce the debt by over $430 million dollars.  This bill passed the education committee with both Republican and Democrat support on a 14-5 vote.  I've …
