CHAMPIONS: Lakeville North Slams Way To State Title

Led by Alyssa Goehner's 39 kills, the Lakeville North Panthers beat Eden Prairie in four games to win second state title in three years

Stopped in a thrilling five-set state finals a year ago by several member of this Eden Prairie team, top-seeded Lakeville North wasn’t to be denied this time around. Lakeville North won 25-21, 25-19, 19-25 and 25-18 in the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul Saturday to claim its second Class AAA Minnesota state volleyball championship in three seasons. Stopped in the state finals a year ago by several member of this Eden Prairie team, top-seeded Lakeville North wasn’t to be denied this time around. Led by all-star junior Alyssa Goehner – who had 39 kills – the Panthers dropped defending state champion Eden Prairie in four games. "My goal was a state championship and we have it," said Goehner. Two Lakeville Athletes Take Titles at State Track Finals

One North and one South athlete secured titles.

Editor's Note: Photographs featuring the winners of the competition were not available. The 2011 Minnesota State High School League Boys and Girls Track and Field Championships came to a close Saturday, and both Lakeville North and South didn't leave empty-handed in the Class AA finals.  Lakeville South's Lee Barnes took first place in the boys pole vault, finishing at 15 feet even. On the girls' side, Nicole Naatjes of Lakeville North also captured the first place title in the pole vault, leaping a 11 feet 9 inches in the final competition.  Overall, the Lakeville South boys team finished with a team ranking of 24th with an overall score of 15 points.
