Panthers blank Northfield 5-0 to claim Section 1AA title.
The Lakeville North Panthers are headed to the state tournament after their 5-0 win over Northfield in the Section 1AA finals Tuesday night. The Panthers scored less than four minutes into the game, made it 2-0 with a goal midway through the first half, then struck again in the 38th minute to take a 3-0 and pretty much finish off the Raiders by halftime. “We played a very good team tonight in Lakeville North,” Northfield coach Troy Cohrs said. “I just think we didn't handle the pressure well and we put ourselves in a couple of holes early.” Panthers co-head coach Bulut Ozturk said Lakeville North's game plan was dictate play to the Raiders, especially in the early going. “We wanted to impose our game on them, which is more of a possession-…

Panthers, Cougars boys and girls all advance to 1AA semifinals with Thursday night wins.
It was a triumphant evening for Lakeville soccer on Thursday as all four Lakeville squads claimed victories to open their respective Section 1AA Tournament playoff runs. North, South Girls Soccer Two goals apiece from Simone Kolander and Taylor Brownrigg gave the top-seeded North girls soccer team a 4-0 shutout win over No. 8 seed Rochester Mayo, advancing into a home semifinal against No. 4 Owatonna at 1 p.m. Saturday. Second-seeded South claimed a 3-1 defeat of No. 7 seed Rochester John Marshall as the Cougars will now host No. 3 seed Northfield in the semis at 1 p.m. Saturday. Panthers, Cougars bounced out of playoffs by Rochester squads.
The postseason came to an end for the majority of players from the Lakeville North and South girls tennis teams as both squads fell in the sectional playoffs on Tuesday. Girls Tennis North and South each had its team tennis season ended by squads from Rochester, as the Panthers were defeated 7-0 by Century and the Cougars were bested 6-1 by Mayo in the Section 1AA semifinals. Individual statistics were not made available. Selected members of both teams will have a chance to earn a berth for themselves in the state tournament as the sectional individual playoffs begin on Thursday at the Rochester Athletic Club. After unsuccessful field preparations, the field was ruled unsafe for athletes and will not be used for the first couple weeks of the fall sports season.
Lakeville South’s stadium field was deemed unplayable at the end of last week after field preparations throughout the summer were unsuccessful. The field has been taking a year-round beating over the past couple years with the addition of lacrosse games being held on the field during the spring and turf issues have led to the poor conditions. It was ruled inadequate by school officials—including Lakeville South Activities Director Neil Strader—after a couple pre-season sporting events were held on the field. The field will not be used for at least a few weeks, according to Strader. “To grow it back in the long term we need to stay off it for a couple weeks,” Strader said. “We need to go through some short-term pain to get some long-term …

Several North, South squads commence their 2011 campaigns, more to follow this week.
A number of teams from Lakeville North and South high schools began their fall sports season last week, with more set to start this week. North Girls Soccer A 6-1 win at North St. Paul last Thursday kicked off the North girls soccer season in fine manner. The Panthers spreading out the scoring as Alexa Trakalo, Cam Peterson, Emily Clarkin, Gracia Bonesho, Simone Kolander and Taylor Brownrigg each netted one goal apiece. North Boys Soccer The North boys soccer team claimed one win and one tie last week to open its year, defeating Rochester Mayo 1-0 last Thursday before tying next-door Farmington 0-0 on Saturday.
