The district already requires background checks for parents who chaperone parties or overnight activities.
The Lakeville school district's newly formed security task force is about ready to move forward with a proposal that would require parents who wish to volunteer with their child's school to undergo a criminal background check. According to a report in Sun Thisweek, Lakeville schools Superintendent Dr. Lisa Snyder told the task force at its Jan. 14 meeting that she would soon be approaching the School Board with the formal recommendation at a board meeting. The district already requires background checks for parents who chaperone parties or overnight activities. This would just re-enforce the background check policy. The policy is just one of many security changes the 20-person task force has identified to change. Some ideas—such as metal …

Florida professor James Tracy has said the devastating shooting in Newtown, CT, was part of a government and media conspiracy related to gun control.
On Jan. 10, Lakeville Patch brought you the heart-warming story of Holly Ryan, a school psychologist at Kenwood Trail Middle School who traveled back to her hometown of Newtown, CT, to help victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy. The story proved that those December events will forever resonate with folks, not only in Lakeville, but around the world. So much so, people on the other side of the fence are sharing their voice, and it's causing a whole new host of problems for Newtown victims. Florida Atlantic University Professor James Tracy has vocally questioned whether Sandy Hook has even happened. Tracy has said he believes that the school shooting could have been a performance by people he called "crisis actors." The reason…

It wasn't until later that she learned half a country away, her hometown of Newtown, CT, had become the site of the second-deadliest school shooting in U.S. history. Ryan, 40, a school psychologist at Lakeville's Kenwood Trail Middle School, says text messages from her mother and sister first alerted her to the tragedy that unfolded. "I think the events are still unimaginable in their entirety," Ryan said. "There are just so many personal accounts—families directly and indirectly affected—it's overwhelming." Ryan grew up in Newtown. She lived there until she was 20, she said. And while she and he family moved …

Sen. Al Franken met this afternoon with counselors, safety experts and ISD 196 administrators at Dakota Hills Middle School.
Sen. Al Franken came to Eagan’s Dakota Hills Middle School this afternoon to discuss school safety protocols with counselors, safety experts and ISD 196 administrators in the wake of last month’s Newtown shootings. Franken repeatedly emphasized the importance of early treatment of mental illness and also spoke about lockdown drills and perimeter security in remarks to reporters after the meeting. “You [need to] catch this kind of mental illness early, treat it, so it doesn’t grow into something where you have somebody who becomes a shooter,” he said. ISD 196 superintendent Jane Berenz; the district’s safety director, Mark Parr; and Dakota Hills Middle principal Trevor Johnson were among the 12 participants in the closed-door roundtable …

The task force will look at security and make recommendations to the school board if needed.
Just hours after the Newtown, CT school shooting on Friday that left 28 people dead, including 20 children, Lakeville Schools Superintendent Dr. Lisa Snyder wrote an email to parents. In it, she offered condolences and sympathy to those affected, and addressed concerns folks may have over Lakeville's own security policies. Snyder was candid in the letter, telling parents she tasked building principals to review their security plans and procedures during the week and send recommendations for improvement. To that end, Snyder has also decided to take administrative action. Within the next two weeks, Lakeville schools will form a task force to make school security recommendations for all schools that the School Board can consider. Those …

Dakota County Sheriff Dave Bellows said Thursday that Minnesota’s permit-to-carry law allows some people with serious mental health issues to acquire firearms.
Like us on Facebook | Follow us on Twitter | Sign up for our newsletter In the days after the Newtown, CT, shooting, Dakota County has seen a big uptick in applications for permits to carry a pistol. Dakota County Sheriff Dave Bellows said the county received 30 requests Monday and 26 Tuesday—about three times higher than the seven-10 applications processed in a typical day. "We have the staff to handle" the upsurge in applications, Bellows said. But what does worry him is the fact that some of the people applying for permits may have serious mental-health issues. And under current law, there's nothing he can do about it. “Since 2008, we’ve seen a significant increase from year to year, and this year is going to be the highest year ever,” …

"The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun," the NRA's Wayne LaPierre said.
In an amazing Friday morning press conference in Washington DC, the National Rifle Association broke its weeklong silence following the horrific shooting of 26 people at a school in Newtown, CT and called for a surge of gun-carrying "good guys" around American schools. NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre called for a new kind of American domestic security revolving around armed civilians, arguing that "the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun." (What do you think about the NRA's solution? Tell us in the comments.) "We care about our president, so we protect him with armed Secret Service agents," LaPierre said. "Members of Congress work in offices surrounded by Capitol Police officers. Yet, when it …

Visit our sister Patch in Newtown for local coverage of the tragedy. Dear ISD 194 Community: It is with disbelief and a saddened heart that I write to you today. By now all of you have heard about the tragic events that occurred yesterday at an elementary school in Connecticut. I want to personally assure you that safety is our absolute number one priority.
