Lakeville's School Board Approves Orchard Lake Elementary Impact Academy

The program will have room for 108 students in year one, with registration beginning in April.

Despite a bit of controversy, Lakeville's School Board approved a plan Tuesday to offer the Impact Academy for grades K-3 at Orchard Lake Elementary School beginning this fall. The pilot program has been a source of contention for weeks with teachers and parents expressing concern they, or their students, may be pushed out of the school if the academy was implemented. The district held several public meetings to hear from constituents and staff were held to answer questions. The Impact Academy is a significant departure from traditional learning, in many ways. The cost-neutral pilot program will group students by their skill level in reading, math and writing, instead of age or grade. It allows students to learn, and grow, at their own …

limited communication because the board didn't want to discuss something not yet approved. Isn't that why we discuss things- to approve or disapprove? Whenever I hear a program is cost neutral I prepare to pay more.   more ›

Roz Peterson Meets With Congress to Discuss Education Funding

Lakeville's School Board Chair joined 700 other board members from across the nation to meet with Congress to discuss education funding.

Roz Peterson, Lakeville's School Board Chair, joined 700 other school board leaders from around the nation to meet with Congress in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday to advocate for education programs that could be cut by the federal government by way of sequestration. The school board leaders urged Congress to forge a bipartisan solution that puts education first. The meeting was part of the National School Boards Association’s (NSBA) 40th annual Federal Relations Network Conference, being held Jan. 27-29, 2013. With the sequestration looming, more than 700 school boards have passed resolutions advocating Congress to stop the across-the-board cuts that would dismantle key education programs in their school districts. These federal cuts to K-12…

According to the link provided, ISD 194 is not one of the "700 school boards [which] have passed resolutions advocating Congress to stop the across-the-board cuts that would dismantle key education programs in their school districts". Nor is there a comment from Peterson regarding sequestration, one way or the other, in the article. All we know is that Peterson apparently went to a meeting in DC…   more ›

Next Year's School Calendar To Have Fewer Educational Days for Students

Students in Lakeville's schools will be going to class two fewer times next year. The move allows teachers to have more time for grading, training, and ultimately, teaching, administrators say.

Next year's educational calendar is a good news, bad news proposition for Lakeville's public school families. On Jan. 8, the district's School Board approved next year's educational calendar and it features two fewer educational days for students. (See the calendars by clicking on them to the right.) Lakeville already had more educational days for students as compared to other local school districts (see table below). By reducing in-class days for students, teachers, administrators say, will have more time for curriculum planning, grading papers, and professional development. Superintendent Dr. Lisa Snyder told Lakeville Patch that the calendar change makes Lakeville a "21st Century school district." "The bottom line is do we want 'A' …

Comparing the educational system here to that of Germany or Japan is almost impossible, as we strive to educate everybody, not just the educable. Consequently, many of our teachers do more caretaking than teaching. Considering that our federal government is broke, and our state government is looking under every rock for an extra dime to spend, it hardly makes economic sense to pay a babysitter $…   more ›

After 6 Years, Lakeville's School Board Has a New Leader

Roz Peterson was named School Board chair at Tuesday night's meeting—which was also the first for Board Member-elect Terry Lind.

Every year, during its first January meeting, Lakeville's School Board elects a new chair—a leader to steer the board for the coming year. Whether there has been an election or not, each year the board discusses, nominates, then votes for a new chair. And on Jan. 8, for the first time in six years, a new leader emerged. Roz Peterson was selected by the board as the 2013 School Board chair, a post Judy Keliher has had since 2006. The change wasn't a surprise—Keliher said last year when she was nominated and voted as chair, that she would likely be stepping aside to allow Peterson—who had challenged unsuccessfully for the post in 2011—to take the reigns. Peterson will serve as chair, with Board Member Jim Skelly serving as vice-chair. …

Former Lakeview Elementary School Principal Terry Lind will join incumbents Bob Erickson and Judy Keliher on Lakeville's School Board.

Terry Lind, a former principal at Lakeview Elementary School, was elected to the school board on Nov. 6, joining incumbents Bob Erickson and Judy Keliher who were also re-elected. Lind takes the seat of longtime Board Member Kathy Lewis who announced earlier this year she's retiring from public office after 22 years.
