Take our poll: what do you think of Lakeville's newest McDonald's restaurant giving its first 100 customers a free value meal every day for a year.
Gastric gluttony, or good business? Evidently, that just depends on how you look at it. Lakeville's newest McDonald's location is set to open Friday morning at 4 a.m., and when it does, the restaurant will give the first 100 customers a free value meal every day for a year. When Lakeville Patch first reported in April that Lakeville's City Council approved plans to demolish the old Dino's Gyros building sitting at 179th Street West and Cedar Avenue—in the Cub Foods anchored Lakeville Crossing mall—so McDonald's can construct a new restaurant in its place, the reaction among readers was harsh. "Disappointing. My family loves Dino's. So nice to have a different option around here. We certainly don't need another McDonald's. Yuck," Adria …

And some fun coffee facts from Patch on the side!
Are you a coffee fan? If so, tomorrow—Sept. 29, 2012—is your lucky day. It's National Coffee Day and the unofficial holiday has some local coffee peddlers offering free cups of joe. Like last year, local brew-masters at McDonalds say they're offering free small coffees—pretty standard around the country, they say—and Twin Cities-based Caribou will be serving free small cups of Amy's blend coffee to customers who present official Amy's blend coupons. The coupon will be posted on Caribou's social platforms, the company said in a press release. All day Saturday, buy one pound of Dunn Brothers' fresh roasted coffee beans and get the second pound at half price, according to the coffee retailer. And while there aren't any outlets locally, 7-…

With Lakeville's Dino's Gyros officially gone, McDonalds is set to take over the space along Cedar and 179th Street. But residents seem less than excited.
Last month it was revealed that Lakeville's Dino's Gyros would be closing up shop and a new McDonalds would be taking its place. A fair amount of controversy surrounded the situation, with representatives from Dino's telling customers they were caught unaware the leassor of the space in Crossroads of Lakeville mall was shopping the location to McDonalds. Regardless, on April 16, Lakeville's City Council approved plans to raze the building Dino's occupied and let McDonalds construct its third Lakeville location. By the end of the month, Dino's was gone, and to this date, it's still unclear if Dino's will find a new Lakeville location. If comments on the Lakeville Patch story and conversation on our Facebook page were any indication, …

A Baltimore woman is claiming one-third of the $656 million Mega Millions jackpot, but colleagues at the McDonald's restaurant where she works say she bought the tickets for a workplace pool—and that they're winners too.
Do you enter office lottery pools? You know the kind—everyone toss in a buck or two and the whole office can buy 30 lottery tickets for some super-jackpot. In the event one of them hits, you all split to winnings. Too bad it doesn't always work that way ... Last week's Mega Millions mania has plunged a Maryland McDonald’s into a bubbling cauldron of controversy hotter than a deep-fried apple pie, according to the New York Post. Workers at the fast-food joint who pooled their cash for tickets are furious at a colleague who claims she won with a ticket she bought for herself and has no intention of sharing. “We had a group plan, but I went and played by myself. [The ‘winning’ ticket] wasn’t on the group plan,” McDonald’s “winner’’ Mirlande …

But a new McDonalds could soon be found on the southeast corner of Cedar Avenue and Dodd Boulevard, where Dino’s Gyros is located.
Editor's note: the original story said the proposed McDonalds would go next to CVS Pharmacy, on the southwest corner of Cedar Avenue and Dodd Boulevard. This is incorrect. Lakeville Patch regrets the error. The corner of Cedar Avenue and Dodd Boulevard looks a lot different. But despite the mass tree clearing project to the property on the northeast corner of the busy intersection, there isn't a new development in the works. Lakeville City Administrator Steve Mielke said the property owner cleared the trees and brush in order to farm on the land this summer. The same can't be said for the southwest corner of the intersection, adjacent to the Cub Foods anchored mall, and across from the CVS Pharmacy. Frank Dempsey, an associate planner with…

And some fun coffee facts from Patch on the side!
Are you a coffee fan? If so, today is your lucky day. It's National Coffee Day and the unofficial holiday has some local coffee peddlers offering free cups of joe. McDonalds says its stores are offering free small coffees, and Caribou is offering buy one coffee, get one for a friend for free promotion today. And while there aren't any outlets locally, 7-Eleven, Krispy Kreme and Dunkin' Donuts are giving away free or discounted coffee this morning. Starbucks isn't offering any promotions. But in typical Lakeville Patch fashion, as you hunt down your free cup o’ joe, here are five things we discovered about coffee that every bean aficionado should know. 1. Is “I need a cup of coffee to start my day” part of your daily vocabulary? You’re not …
