The annual ranking of public high schools was announced Tuesday by U.S. News & World Report, and Lakeville South High School has dropped off the magazine's list. In 2012, the high school was named the 12th best public high school in Minnesota—and the 607th best in the country—but this year it didn't make the cut as one of the 46 ranked schools. More than 21,000 public high schools throughout the country were reviewed. Criteria include student-teacher ratio, a college readiness index (determined by percentage of students taking and passing Advanced Placement and/or International Baccalaureate exams), and students' proficiency on standardized tests. This is the second season in three years North has earned a berth to the State Boys High School Hockey Tournament.
UPDATED (8:57 p.m.) The Lakeville North boys hockey team is headed back to State. North's boys hockey team beat Lakeville South 6-3 on Thursday night in the Section 1AA finals to earn its second section title in three years. It's too soon to say who the Panthers will meet in the quarterfinals of the State Boys High School Hockey Tournament next Thursday, March 7 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Both of Lakeville's high schools will be creating new and different "pathways of academic concentration" focusing on engineering and business.
Big classroom changes are coming to Lakeville's two high schools. Lakeville North will adjust some of its classroom programming in order to create a "business academy pathway" while Lakeville South is set to pilot a new Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) academy, which will also offer a "pathway" of academic concentration. Lakeville's school board heard a report on the new classroom programming at its meeting on Dec. 11. A formal vote to approve the changes will happen at a future meeting. The Lakeville South High School bands invite one and all to a concert at 7 p.m. on Dec. 11, featuring guest composer/arranger, Shelley Hanson. Hanson is a composer, clarinetist, conductor and record producer whose music has been performed on all continents except Antarctica. The event is free to all and Hanson will be conducting the Lakeville South Wind Ensemble playing her arrangement of "Noel/Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring." The Symphonic Band and Percussion Ensembles will also be performing. Chuck, Cindy and Andrew Beske mourn the death of their beautiful daughter and sister, Kaitlin Marie Augusta Beske, 22, who died at home on Sunday, Oc. 21. Kaitlin was baptized on Oct. 28, 1990 in the Rosemount United Methodist Church. Her faith was the foundation upon which she lived her life. She will be remembered by all for her vibrant and caring personality. She especially enjoyed her friendships and her family. After a rough few weeks, the Cougars got back in the win column in decisive fashion.
Lakeville South's football team hasn't been living up to their own expectations, much less those who said in the pre-season the Cougars would compete for the conference title. The Cougars were 2-4 coming into their game against Bloomington Kennedy, and apparently the Eagles where just what Lakeville needed. They beat up on Kennedy to the tune of 55-28. That's how many Lakeville students were named National Merit Scholarship semifinalists in September, according to a news release issued by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, a nonprofit organization based in Evanston, IL.
