Roz Peterson was named School Board chair at Tuesday night's meeting—which was also the first for Board Member-elect Terry Lind.
Every year, during its first January meeting, Lakeville's School Board elects a new chair—a leader to steer the board for the coming year. Whether there has been an election or not, each year the board discusses, nominates, then votes for a new chair. And on Jan. 8, for the first time in six years, a new leader emerged. Roz Peterson was selected by the board as the 2013 School Board chair, a post Judy Keliher has had since 2006. The change wasn't a surprise—Keliher said last year when she was nominated and voted as chair, that she would likely be stepping aside to allow Peterson—who had challenged unsuccessfully for the post in 2011—to take the reigns. Peterson will serve as chair, with Board Member Jim Skelly serving as vice-chair. …

Former Lakeview Elementary School Principal Terry Lind will join incumbents Bob Erickson and Judy Keliher on Lakeville's School Board.
Lakeville's School Board has a not-so-new-face joining the ranks. Terry Lind, a former principal at Lakeview Elementary School, was elected to the school board on Nov. 6, joining incumbents Bob Erickson and Judy Keliher who were also re-elected. Lind takes the seat of longtime Board Member Kathy Lewis who announced earlier this year she's retiring from public office after 22 years. By the numbers, among all 22 precincts, Erickson led all vote getters with 11,948 votes, good for 22.46 percent of the total ballots cast. Lind finished second with 11,746 votes, or 22.12 percent. Keliher finished with 11,344 votes and 21.33 percent. Jennifer Harmening finished fourth with 10,055, or 18.90 percent. Lori Amborn, who dropped out of the race before…

Keliher is seeking re-election to a four-year seat on Lakeville's School Board.
Lakeville Area Public District School Board Chair Judy Keliher is seeking re-election this November. She's been chair-woman of the board since 2006. Keliher has lived in Lakeville for 26 years and she has four children and two grandchildren. Her daughter attends Lakeville North High School and her three sons are all graduates of the Lakeville Area Public Schools. From the press release announcing her run for re-election: Keliher is committed to delivering a world-class education and knows the current model of education is not financially sustainable. “The best schools will adapt and change while still improving through innovative thinking and programming,” says Keliher. “I believe a sustainable education model that supports a high-quality …

A week after the City Council voted to increase their expense accounts by $250 per person, Lakeville's School Board opted to keep their pay checks the same as they've been for the past six years.
Lakeville's School Board Members will again receive $5,850 as their salary this year, and 2012 marks the the seventh consecutive year that Board Members receive the same salary. The vote, held on Jan. 10 during the group's regular meeting, was routine, but drew added significance after Lakeville's City Council voted to increase their expense accounts by $250 per person last week. The council's move drew the ire of some, both on the board and in the community, especially after the council let go of an employee as a cost cutting move. Lakeville's School Board and City Council have different compensation rules. Board members receive a flat salary of $5,850 a year, with no other compensation. Council members receive a salary of roughly $8,600…

School Board elected Judy Keliher on 5-1 vote without a second nomination.
Last year, it took Lakeville's School Board nearly a month to select its leader. This year, it took less than five minutes. Judy Keliher, who has served as the board's chairwoman since 2006, was voted by the group's members to keep the leadership post for 2012, during the group's regular meeting on Jan. 10. Board Member Roz Peterson, who last year sought the chair position, offered the only nomination when she suggested Keliher for the post. Board Member Michelle Volk was the only dissenter in the 5-1 vote “It’s the principle ... any good organization needs to change up its leadership," Volk said. Last year, Keliher was elected after a brief power struggle delayed the official appointment. Peterson was nominated for the post as well, and …

Who will be School Board chair? Will the decision have as much drama as last year's vote?
When Lakeville's School Board meets at 7 p.m. on Tuesday for its first regular meeting of 2012, the first order of business as a group will be to assign its leadership structure for 2012. Last year, there was a bit of drama as the board was split as to whom to name as chair of the board. Longtime Chair woman Judy Keliher wanted to keep the post, while Board member Roz Peterson wanted to assume the chair position for the first time. After a couple weeks of delays, Keliher was named board chair. The vote as to whom will assume this year's leadership roles is the first item on the docket, but not the only thing the board will discuss. The group will also declare who will serve as treasurer, clerk, and vice chair, as well as assign committee …

Without a contract since July 1, Lakeville's teachers say preparation time and healthcare are sticking points.
Lakeville's teachers have been working without a contract since July 1, and it seems as though impatience is growing. The teacher's union, Education Minnesota Lakeville, and the Lakeville Board of Education have met a number of times to negotiate a pact, but EML President Don Sinner says the disagreements seem to be a matter of philosophy. The board has proposed increasing health care premiums as part of the new deal, according to a story in Thisweek Newspapers. But the major sticking point has been the proposal to cut class preparation time. “We want to maintain the prep level we have now,” Sinner said at Tuesday's board meeting. "We have many, many teachers in the high school ranks teaching 210 kids and more during their day, whereas …

The former elementary school may house the district's Early Childhood Family Education program.
Today the Lakeville Area Public Schools Board of Education will conduct a walkthrough of the former Crystal Lake Elementary School. “It’s just to give the board a sense of what the building looks like now and then what it would look like with recommended changes and remodeling,” said Tony Massaros, director of administrative services for Lakeville Area Public Schools. Crystal Lake Elementary closed at the end of the 2010-2011 school year as part of the $15.8 million in budget cuts announced in February. Shuttering the elementary school saves the district $750,000 annually. “It was something that was decided that we had to do,” said Massaros. “Now we’re turning that negative experience into a positive thing.” The board has discussed …

Search firm outlines list of attributes it will use to recruit candidates based on community feedback.
If all goes as planned, the Lakeville Area Public School District can look forward to having a new superintendent in place by August. And that superintendent will have high integrity and ethical values, be a strong communicator and have a strong understanding of district finances. Those were some of the highlighted attributes brought out by a variety of area stakeholders during research conducted by recruiting specialists from School Exec Connect (SEC). The firm was selected to lead the search for Dr. Gary Amoroso’s replacement last month and conducted an intensive day-long survey on June 2 in a number of meetings within the community. Amoroso will be retiring from the district on June 30. SEC presented their findings to the school board …

Board selected School Exec Connect to lead search. Cost for firm still unknown.
School Exec Connect, an Illinois firm with heavy Minnesota ties, will be leading the search for a new superintendent for the Lakeville Area Public School District, it was announced this morning. Lakeville’s School Board decided to go with School Exec Connect after interviewing two search firms, the other being BKB Associates, of Mankato, during a meeting yesterday. The firm will be charged with finding candidates interested in vying for the superintendent position Dr. Gary Amoroso will leave at the end of June. Board chairwoman Judy Keliher said the School Board will vote on the firm’s contract at its next meeting on May 10 and begin having meetings about finding a new district leader thereafter. “We felt (School Exec Connent) really …

I would just like to say that many of the negative comments expressed above are very disheartening. I commend Travis and Kristin for trying to be the voices of reason. Sadly even with all of their good information people still refuse to listen. Bottom line is this attitude that teachers are waste of money and make too much is irritating. Yes the average salary is $61,000 well do you know how many…   more ›
