Students rejoice! Lakeville schools cancelled classes district-wide on Tuesday, thanks to a snowstorm that blanketed the metro area with a thick layer of freshly fallen powder overnight. Twitter was buzzing with happy kids who couldn't believe they actualy had a snow day. "It's been five hours and I still can't believe Lakeville kids finally got a snow day #seemslikeamiracle," wrote student Umarah Kabir. The winter storm deposited as much as 10 inches of snow during the overnight hours in some Dakota County communities, according to the National Weather Service. A winter storm warning is still in effect until 6 p.m. Tuesday.
While most folks in Lakeville woke up Monday morning with a new inch of snow, Tuesday morning will likely be a different story. New snow accumulations will of 6 to 10 inches, and 12 inches in some areas, are expected overnight and tomorrow. The result will be a massive hassle for Tuesday morning commuters. A winter storm warning is in effect from midnight Sunday through 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Spring may be on its way, but Winter is going to remind everyone who is still the boss of March. And by Tuesday evening, as much as 12 inches of fresh snow could be on the ground in Lakeville. The National Weather Service in Chanhassen has issued a winter storm warning for much of central and southern Minnesota, and western Wisconsin. Six to 10 inches is expected in most areas, with some storm totals reaching 12 inches. The warning is in effect from midnight Sunday through 6 p.m. Tuesday. According to the weather service, the storm will come through in two waves of moderate to heavy snow. The first will come Sunday night through Monday morning. The National Weather Service says Lakeville could see up to 6 inches of snow.
Updated 5:30 p.m. 2/20/2013: The National Weather Service Winter Storm Watch has been reduced to a Winter Weather Advisory, as the bulk of Thursday's storm is expected to pass to our south. But that's a relative statement. As much as half a foot of snow could still fall in Lakeville and the rest of Dakota County from Thursday through Friday morning. Tired of the parade of snow storms? Bad news if you said yes. The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook Wednesday morning for Dakota County and the Twin Cities area. A weak storm system is spreading light snow across Lakeville and Dakota County. Light freezing drizzle is possible tonight through Thursday morning. The National Weather Service predicts up to 3 inches of snow could fall in Lakeville through Thursday afternoon. Projected totals are higher to the south as a massive storm slams the midwest.
With the track of an impending super-storm shifting, Lakeville and Dakota County are now included in a winter storm advisory that takes effect at 9 p.m. Wednesday and expires 6 p.m. Thursday. The National Weather Service says up to 3 inches of snow could fall in Lakeville through Thursday afternoon. Projected totals are higher to the south. A whopping 15-inches are forecast for parts of southern Minnesota and Iowa, as well as blizzard conditions. But snow isn't the only concern. The wind will pickup speeds overnight with gusts as high as 30 mph predicted for Thursday, creating visibliity issues with blowing snow. Then the cold hits. The rain is already falling and will likely mix with snow Saturday and Sunday.
Lakeville will see some rain and snow this weekend. It will be sloppy, but nothing like last weekend. According to the National Weather Service, rain began falling ovenight and will continue through much of Saturday, with high temperatures in the mid-30s and low temperatures around 30 degrees. Cities north and west of the Minneapolis/Twin Cities metro area will see freezing rain. Some snow is possible Saturday night into midday Sunday in lakeville. The high temperature is forecast to be 31 Sunday, with a low temperature of 17 degrees. The National Weather Service calls today’s snowstorm “major” and “powerful.” Several inches of snow could fall today.
Looks like the weather-poeple got the snow forecast wrong. This time in a crazy-weird way—they predicted much, much less than we're actually going to get. As of noon on Sunday, Lakeville already had more than 6-inches of snow, according to a boot-print report by a resident who posted the news on Facebook. The Twin Cities may see its first significant accumulation of snow this weekend, according to National Weather Service forecasters.
SNOW. No, Really. There is the mention of snow in the forecast? If you believe the most current weather forecast for this weekend, the Twin Cities metro area—including Lakeville—finally could see the first measurable snow of this winter season. The National Weather Service's forecasters are calling for a 70 percent chance of snow on Friday, with a reduced chance overnight. The probability picks up again on Saturday with a 60 percent chance of snow again. On Sunday, the weather service is also calling for a 40 percent chance of snow. High temperatures throughout the weekend are expected to be in the low- to mid-30s, according to NWS forecasters. Nearly 20 inches of snow will fall north of the Twin Cities, but in Lakeville, 1-4 inches of sloppy, wet snow will fall with periods of heavy rain mixed in.
The snow has begun to fall in Lakeville, but don't get used to it. Soon, the snow will be changing over to sleet and eventually rain throughout the day and evening. And while the Twin Cities may not get a lot of snow, we could get a lot of rain, and that could cause minor flooding issues as the ground is still frozen. Forecasters are suggesting the drive home shouldn't be too bad, but tomorrow morning's commute could be chaos.
