From the Police Chief

Routine Patrol Stop by Lakeville Police Nets Stolen Car, Credit Cards

Also, social media and text messages are changing the way police are doing their jobs.

Patrol officers can never become complacent when stopping vehicles for traffic violations because many times when officers make traffic stops for even routine or minor traffic violations, something unexpected will occur.  That is exactly what happened late one night recently when Officer Jessica Swaner stopped a large SUV in a quiet residential neighborhood for a traffic violation. As soon as the vehicle rolled to a stop, the driver and the passenger bailed out of the truck and ran away in different directions. Officer Swaner alerted dispatch of the fleeing vehicle occupants and assisting officers responded to the area.  The officers searched the area and within a short amount of time, the passenger was located and taken into custody …

POLL: Did the Political Campaign Cost You Any Friendships?

We're hearing reports of long-time friendships being cut off, especially on social media, during the bitterly contested campaign. Did it happen to you?

The arguing is over, and so is the election. But has it hurt your relationships? Admittedly, arguing over politics never really ends in the United States; that's part of the price we pay for living in a constitutional republic, in which the big decisions are made by a majority of the citizens. But at least, with the question of "who's going to be president the next four years?" settled, the arguing can settle back down to the ordinary background noise of bickering, as opposed to the daily shoutfests in which so many seemed to be engaged during the campaign. Or can it? We're hearing lots of reports about long-time relationships being cut off in recent months, especially on social media, as people discover that, "Oh my God, you're a (fill in…

Web Fun: 'Like' Lakeville Patch on Facebook, Destroy My Co-Workers

How you can help me destroy and humiliate the fine, upstanding people who help make the Dakota County Patches what they are.

My fellow Patch editors in the south suburbs of Dakota County are some of the nicest, most inherently decent, upstanding professionals I have ever had the privilege to call peers. I must destroy them all. Yes, destroy them. Lakeville Patch's Facebook page must have the most fans in all the land. And that means we must clobber the competition upside the wireless mouse. "Like" Lakeville Patch on Facebook Each Patch has a Facebook fan page where people who have clicked "like" on the page can come read the news, talk over issues in town with their neighbors, and even share photos or links. In some cases, it's more convenient for readers to get the news and chat with neighbors on Facebook. No doubt we'd love for you to visit Lakeville Patch …

Patch Poll: Do You Think Facebook Will Disappear?

An investment analyst says Facebook will be irrelevant or outright "disappear" within eight years, going the way of other tech companies. What do you think?

Nearly one billion people have personal profiles on Facebook. A billion. One billion. Think about that for a second. There are 6.8 billion people calling Earth home right now, and about one of every seven of us use Facebook. Earth is big and has a lot of people. From those living in the South American rain-forests, to the Aboriginal people of Australia, to you and I ... and one of every seven of us have a Facebook account. Astonishing? Think of it like this: hunger and starvation is a serious problem on a global scale, right? We talk about it as a society all the time. According to WorldHunger.org, worldwide, around one billion people are hungry right now. That's the same number of people that have Facebook accounts—one in seven. Now that …

It may not disappear completely in 8 years, but people will become bored with it. I don't use FB nearly as much as I once did. Now I check it only a couple times a day and I don't post nearly as much. The amount of people using FB is also skewed as many people have mulitiple accounts...granted that's probably a small # to the whole. Also is one billion including all the company FB accounts as …   more ›

Update on Century Middle School Suspensions

An undisclosed number of students were suspended on May 22 after sharing an inappropriate photo of another student.

Lakeville Area Public School officials are still tight lipped as to how many Century Middle School students were suspended earlier this week for their roles in sharing an inappropriate photo of another student. While the district did confirm there were suspensions, officials wont say how long the suspensions will last, or the means in which the inappropriate photo was shared. Indications are that some students will also be expelled for the incident, but student expulsions require more procedural obligations. As first reported by Lakeville Patch May 23, an unidentified number of Century students were suspended due to a May 21 incident in which an inappropriate photo was digitally disseminated around the school's student community. UPDATE: Undisclosed Number of Century Middle School Students Suspended

Lakeville school district officials acknowledge that an undisclosed number of Century Middle School students have been suspended for digitally disseminating an inappropriate photo of a fellow student.

4:55 p.m. update Lakeville Patch was originally told by the Lakeville Area Public School District that students had been suspended and expelled, but the district's Director of Administrative Services Tony Massaros recently told Patch that no students have been expelled, and the original statement was innacurate. The older version of the story has been updated. Original story from 3:29 p.m. An unidentified number of Century Middle School students have been suspended due to a May 22 incident in which an inappropriate photo was digitally disseminated around the school's student community. Lakeville Area Public School officials have acknowledged the incident and also said the Lakeville Police Department and Dakota County Attorneys Office are …

POLL: Would You Give Your Facebook Login to a Potential Employer?

Some job seekers are now being asked to allow prospective employers to view the content of their social media accounts.

Would you let a prospective employer snoop around in your social media accounts? More and more employers are reportedly asking to do just that. According to Reuters, studies have shown that examining a job seeker's Facebook profile can yield more information than a personality test. However, as social media users become more security-conscious, employers are asking for -- and in some cases getting - access to private information. USA Today reports that a Maryland correctional officer willingly gave his password during an interview because he feared that failure to do so would prevent him from gaining employment. "I needed my job to feed my family. I had to," he recalled, according to the USA Today article. New York statistician Justin …
