Lakeville North Tumbles In State Championship 28-7

Defending state champion, and eight-time state champion Eden Prairie, is too much for the Lakeville North Panthers, who fall in the Class 6A football state title game Friday

Winning state championships never gets routine, said Eden Prairie coach Mike Grant. “It never does,” said Grant, ‘because every team is a different team. Every team is unique and this is a group of kids that I’ve known the seniors since third grade. Sunday night is our banquet, and it will be the last time they’re ever together. And Monday, we’ll have 100-some kids in the weight room getting ready for Elk River Thursday before Labor Day.” So the beat goes on for the Eagles. And Grant should know. He’s directed the Eden Prairie Eagles to eight state titles in his 30 years as head coach. The Eagles won their eighth Prep Bowl crown Friday night in the Metrodome, combining a relentless ground-game offense and a punishing, opportunist defense …

Eden Prairie Tops Lakeville North, 5-0 at State

The loss sends the Panthers to the consolation semifinal on Friday

Lakeville North boys hockey coach Randy Schmitz sees the importance of Friday’s consolation semifinal for the Panthers’ hockey program. Coming off a 5-0 loss to Eden Prairie in Thursday’s Class AA quarterfinal at the Xcel Energy Center, North remains winless at the state tournament since Lakeville split into two schools in 2005 and is 1-11 overall. But a win Friday? “It would do two things. One, it would get that question off that we’ve won one game and we’ve been here six times,” coach Randy Schmitz said. “But it also gives everybody a little more confidence.” The Panthers will get their chance to pick up that elusive win Moorhead at Mariucci Arena in Minneapolis. Game time is set for noon. Top-seeded Eden Prairie ran North’s state record…

Letter to the Editor: City Officials Waiting and Wondering While Mielke Was Shopping

How devoted to Lakeville is Steve Mielke if he's looking for other jobs?

To the Editor: As an entrepreneur, and a former city council candidate, I find it troubling and pompous when our Lakeville City Administrator is shopping for other positions while supposedly working for our best interest. After connecting with, and courting the city of Eden Prairie, Steve Mielke, the current city administrator, has now suggested “you have to be passionate about where you’re working." That begs the question, if you’re passionate about Lakeville, why would you be out looking for another job? And at $137,000, which is a pay cut from the current generous pay of $151,000 (he makes in Lakeville). Further, how can we now trust that Mielke is not going to go “cheat” on Lakeville again? When I say “cheat” I am putting it into the …

The way I see it, the administration and some council members have appointed committees to do their personal bidding, not necessarily what is good for the city of Lakeville. The council and committees should be appointed as a check and balance to government, not to work with them for their personal agendas. I consider myself a patriot for taking a position of speaking up, as this is not easy for …   more ›

Mielke Not Leaving Lakeville for Eden Prairie

Steve Mielke, Lakeville’s city administrator, had been recruited by Eden Prairie for a similar post.

After a brief courtship, Lakeville City Administrator Steve Mielke will not be heading to Eden Prairie. Mielke told Eden Prairie city officials on Feb. 1 that he was no longer interested in that community’s city manager position. Eden Prairie ended up selecting Rick Getschow, the city manager for Hopkins, for its manager. Mielke was originally selected as one of three candidates to go through a panel of interviews with department heads, and participate in an open house for residents to meet the candidates. Mielke dropped out before the Eden Prairie City Council interviews. On Jan. 10, Mielke told Lakeville Patch that he was recruited by Eden Prairie, and that he wasn’t looking for a new job. "I have great affection for this community and I…

Lakeville’s City Administrator Finalist For Similar Post in Eden Prairie

Steve Mielke has been Lakeville's city administrator since 2004.

Lakeville’s City Administrator Steve Mielke is one of three candidates who could take on a similar role with the city of Eden Prairie. Joyce Lorenz, Eden Prairie’s communications manager, said Mielke was named as one of the top three candidates by the City Council on Saturday after a round of interviews whittled their pool from six people to three. The other candidates are Rick Getschow, the city manager for Hopkins, and Ryan Schroeder, Cottage Grove’s city administrator, Lorenz said. For Mielke, the opportunity is a mixture of opportunities, from professional to personal. "I used to live in Eden Prairie—my daughter was baptized in a church there," he said. "My wife and I found it an enjoyable place to live." From a professional stand …
