Defending state champion, and eight-time state champion Eden Prairie, is too much for the Lakeville North Panthers, who fall in the Class 6A football state title game Friday
Winning state championships never gets routine, said Eden Prairie coach Mike Grant. “It never does,” said Grant, ‘because every team is a different team. Every team is unique and this is a group of kids that I’ve known the seniors since third grade. Sunday night is our banquet, and it will be the last time they’re ever together. And Monday, we’ll have 100-some kids in the weight room getting ready for Elk River Thursday before Labor Day.” So the beat goes on for the Eagles. And Grant should know. He’s directed the Eden Prairie Eagles to eight state titles in his 30 years as head coach. The Eagles won their eighth Prep Bowl crown Friday night in the Metrodome, combining a relentless ground-game offense and a punishing, opportunist defense …

Lakeville North's defense dominates as the Panthers advance to Class 6A title game with 28-7 win over Rosemount.
Rosemount served notice early this wasn’t going to be like last time the two South Suburban Conference rivals played. The underdog Irish, who dropped a 35-0 decision to Lakeville North to end the regular season, stunned the favored Panthers with a 68-yard, 12-play scoring drive to open the game and to grab a 7-0 lead. But after spotting that early touchdown, the Panthers dominated the contest defensively and rolled to a 28-7 triumph Thursday in the Class 6A state football semifinals in the Metrodome. The win puts the Lakeville North Panthers (11-1) into the Class 6A finals against the winner of tonight’s Eden Prairie (9-2) vs. Wayzata (9-1) game. The state championship contest will be Nov. 23 in the Metrodome, starting at 7 p.m. “I’ve been…

Orignial story: Lakeville North's run in the State Football Tournament was expected. Rosemount's—not so much. Listen to the game live here on Patch starting around 6:45 p.m. tonight. North, 10-1, was considered one of the top teams in the state all year. They finished second in the South Suburban Conference and were the No. 5 seed at state. Rosemount, 7-4, lost to North 35-0 on Oct. 17, and has been the underdog in nearly all if its playoff games. And what makes it even more unusual is that both teams are members of the same conference and section. In previous years, a state matchup like …

Lakeville North dominated Roseville, winning 42-0. It's also totally bananas what the Class 6A State bracket will look like.
UPDATE Lakeville North's next game: The Metrodome. The Panthers qualified for a berth in the 2012 Class 6A State Tournament with a decisive win at home Friday night over Roseville, beating the Raiders 42-0. North, now 9-1, will face a yet to be determined opponent next Thursday or Friday. In something that can only be historic: of the eight teams headed to State, four come from the South Suburban Conference as Section 3 representatives. Prior Lake, Rosemount, and Eastview, along with Lakeville North, all beat their Section 4 opponents on Friday night—Rosemount and Eastview in upsets. But if that wasn't silly enough, all of the Section 6 teams—Wayzata, Edina, Minnetonka and Eden Prairie—beat their Section 5 opponents. All four teams are …

Lakeville North will play an unfamiliar foe in section crossover game.
The Minnesota State High School League has called an audible—changed the play at the line. And now, after routing conference foe Eagan 48-21 in its section playoff opener, the Lakeville North Panthers are scheduled to face a relatively unknown opponent Friday as the section football playoffs continue. In addition to creating the new Class 6A this season for the 32 most populous schools, the MSHSL has also altered the playoff structure for the class, meaning Lakeville North, the No. 2 seed in Section 3AAAAAA, will host Roseville, the No. 5 seed in Section 4AAAAAA, in a combined section matchup. The Panthers (8-1), are scheduled to welcome Roseville at 7 p.m. The Raiders (4-5), seeded fifth in Section 4, upset White Bear Lake 21-14 in the …

Lakeville South was shutout last Friday after posting 49 points the week before.
Football: Lakeville South vs. Apple Valley CHEAT SHEET SITE: Apple Valley High School TIME: 7:00 p.m. Friday ON THE LINE Will the real Lakeville South team please stand up? After finding the end zone seven times in a 49-14 defeat of Prior Lake on Sept. 7, the Cougars couldn't muster up a single point in a 13-0 loss at Edina last Friday night. This week, South remains on the road to take on an Apple Valley team that had its undefeated bubble burst last Friday with a 34-26 home loss to the Lakers. PLAYERS TO WATCH South While the Cougars didn't cross into the end zone last week, we're figuring that senior running back Jordan Johnson, who had four touchdown scampers and 130 yards rushing versus Prior Lake, gets back on the board against the …
