Lakeville North Tumbles In State Championship 28-7

Defending state champion, and eight-time state champion Eden Prairie, is too much for the Lakeville North Panthers, who fall in the Class 6A football state title game Friday

Winning state championships never gets routine, said Eden Prairie coach Mike Grant. “It never does,” said Grant, ‘because every team is a different team. Every team is unique and this is a group of kids that I’ve known the seniors since third grade. Sunday night is our banquet, and it will be the last time they’re ever together. And Monday, we’ll have 100-some kids in the weight room getting ready for Elk River Thursday before Labor Day.” So the beat goes on for the Eagles. And Grant should know. He’s directed the Eden Prairie Eagles to eight state titles in his 30 years as head coach. The Eagles won their eighth Prep Bowl crown Friday night in the Metrodome, combining a relentless ground-game offense and a punishing, opportunist defense …

The title game is the first ever championship game in boys basketball for the city of Lakeville. On to the Finals: Lakeville North to Face Osseo For State Title

The Panthers dominated Eden Prairie 58-41 with a furious second half, advancing to Saturday's Class AAAA title game.

Lakeville North's boys basketball team is one win away from a state championship, a win that would be the first in the city's history. The Panthers (30-1) beat Eden Prairie (23-8) in a semifinal match-up on Thursday that was scarier than the 58-41 score indicated. And now North is set to make some local history when it takes on what could be a depleted Osseo team that needed three overtimes to get past Hopkins 87-86, the three-time defending state champions, and No. 1 team in the state. For Lakeville North, the semifinal game was a story of two halves. Eden Prairie came out hot in the first half, and the Panthers found themselves down 27-13 with just over two minutes to go in the first half. But the momentum shifted and North outscored the…

Panthers Fall In OT in State Volleyball Final

Eden Prairie wins Class AAA volleyball championship with marathon overtime win over defending state champion Lakeville North

In an epic, back-and-forth battle of volleyball heavyweights, Lakeville North came up short by the smallest of margins. Lakeville North fell in overtime to Eden Prairie in the 2011 Minnesota Class AAA girls volleyball tournament championship Saturday night. Eden Prairie won 22-25, 25-21, 19-25, 25-18 and 22-20. Tied at 2-all in game five, back-to-back kills by the Eagles were finally too much for the Panthers to overcome. "I think we played our hearts out," said Lakeville North sophomore Alyssa Goehner, who competed heroically in the final. She led all players in the championship match with 34 kills and 38 digs.  "But they definitely deserve this championship. I'm so proud of the team." The Eden Prairie Eagles came out strong and took a 9-…

Lakeville South's Zane Peterson Wins 215 Pound State Title

Offseason preparation helped Peterson achieve his goal of a state championship.

Lakeville South senior Zane Peterson admits he’s always wanted to replicate Vikings defensive end Jared Allen’s signature hogtie celebration, but the situation has never been quite right. “I’ve always wanted to do it, but in football you get a 15-yard penalty, and you get in trouble with the coaches and all that mumbo-jumbo,” Peterson said. “So I figured I might as well save it for a state title.” On Saturday, he got his chance. The Cougars’ senior won the 215-pound Class AAA state wrestling championship at the Xcel Energy Center, defeating Hasting’s Isaac Eichmann by fall at 2:47 to take home the title. And true to form, he performed the hogtie to celebrate. “I’m sure (Allen) would be proud of me,” Peterson joked. But it was all business …

In Third OT, Lakeville North Boys Hockey Tops South in Section 1AA Finals

Lakeville North Boys Hockey Tops South in Section 1AA Finals after 6 periods.

The Lakeville North boys hockey team needed 51 saves form goaltender Charlie Lindgren, and three overtime periods, but this year's 1AA section final result at the Rochester Recreation Center was the same as last year's—a victory over rival Lakeville South to go to the State Tournament. Despite losing both head-to-head matchups to the cross-town Cougars this year, much like they did last year, the No. 2-seeded Panthers (13-14-1) beat the top-seeded Cougars (16-9-2) when it mattered. Junior Blake Winiecki's wraparound goal 25 seconds into the third overtime was the difference. Winiecky was the lone goal scorer for North, who also scored the team's first goal at 13:53 of the first period, a power-play goal on an assist from Erik Ratt. South's…
