Accused Robber Should Be Committed Rather Than Prosecuted, Attorneys Agree

Jermaine Savory, 32, was arrested on Nov. 6 after allegedly stealing a car, robbing a gas station and leading police on a car chase that reached speeds of 100 miles-per-hour.

Attorneys for the prosecution and defense of Jermaine Savory agreed today that the Minneapolis man who led police on a high-speed car chase last November would benefit more from civil commitment than a criminal case. "Mr. Savory is not competent to assist me in his defense," public defender Warren Kochis told Dakota County District Court Judge Thomas Pugh. "I'd like to insist the court commence with civil commitment proceedings." Dakota County prosecutor Scott Hersey agreed with Kochis' motion and informed Judge Pugh that he could not proceed with the case against Savory without the completion of a psychological evaluation.
