Area Janitors, Security Officers Taking Strike Authorization Vote Saturday

The two groups, represented by SEIU Local 26, will decide whether to give their bargaining committees the power to call a strike, if necessary, in the lagging contract talks.

  Hundreds of Twin Cities-area union janitors and security officers are slated Saturday morning to vote on whether to give their bargaining committees the right to call strikes in the stalled labor negotiations.  Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 26 said it has been bargaining for months for new contracts for its more than 6,000 members who are janitors and security officers, and that the groups have been working since Dec. 31 without new contracts. The union said both of the labor bargaining committees have recommended a "yes" vote for a strike authorizstion.  The union workers, who will take their strike authorization vote at 11 a.m. at the Minneapolis Convention Center, are "facing the threat of reduced hours and …

Lakeville's 'Open to Business' Program Now Open to Small Businesses

“Open to Business” participants will be able to meet with experienced business advisors one-on-one at Lakeville City Hall beginning in February.

Editor's note: The following is a press release from the city of Lakeville. Starting in February, Lakeville residents, small business owners, or entrepreneurs can get free, confidential, one-on-one consultation services and other assistance from “Open to Business,” a joint program between the City of Lakeville, Dakota County Community Development Agency, the Metropolitan Consortium of Community Developers, and other cities in Dakota County. “Open to Business” participants can receive assistance with business plan development, cash flow and financing projects, marketing plans, and will also have access to financing programs. Lakeville's Loeffler a Partner, Not a Bidder on Vikings Stadium

While flattered to be named as a bidder, Loeffler Construction President and Co-Owner Doug Loeffler says the Lakeville firm hopes to be part of the new Minnesota Vikings stadium project only as a partner.

Loeffler Construction is growing—no doubt about that. And the Lakeville-based firm's President and Co-Owner Doug Loeffler acknowledges building the Minnesota Vikings Stadium would be pretty great. But recent media reports—including one found here on Lakeville Patch (published Jan. 15)—are a bit inaccurate, he said. "It's flattering—the reports, but we cannot build it, or portray to build it alone," Loeffler said. "What we are doing ... we’re teamed with Gilbane Building Companies out of Rhode Island. They’re a very large firm that's built other stadiums, and they reached out to us and asked to be a local partner." Lakeville Construction Firm Bids on Vikings Stadium Project

Loeffler Construction of Lakeville is one of six contenders vying for the $975 million stadium deal.

A Lakeville construction company could become the lead contractor on the "People's Stadium," a controversial new venue for the Vikings in downtown Minneapolis.  Lakeville's Loeffler Construction is one of six firms shortlisted for the project, which is expected to run from $675 million to $975 million. Two other Twin Cities companies are contending for the contract, Kraus-Anderson and Mortenson Construction. The project has also attracted three other firms from out of state: Gilbane Building Companies of Rhode Island, Skanska of New Jersey and Hunt Construction of Arizona. The Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority released the list on Friday. The MSFA's final selection will be announced on Feb. 1. Construction of the stadium is expected to…
