Former Gopher Basketball Standout Angie Iverson-Ohnstad to Coach Lakeville South Girls

The former All-Big Ten player for the girl’s Gopher basketball team knows what it takes to win and is excited to start as head coach of the Cougars.

Lakeville South High School Athletic Director Neil Strader announced on Tuesday that Angie Iverson-Ohnstad will be filling the vacant head coaching position on the Cougar girl’s basketball squad. The position was left empty by Lynn Dahled, who coached the Cougar girls for three years before leaving to pursue other opportunities. Iverson-Ohnstad attended Owatonna High School where she was a standout athlete. After high school she accepted a full-ride scholarship to the University of Minnesota to play on the Gopher women's team. While she was there, she was a four-year letter winner, team captain for two years, All Big Ten for two years, and Academic All Big Ten for three years. She also led the nation in rebounding during her junior year. …

North Girls Beat South But Unsatisfied With Level of Play

The Panthers beat South handily, but are not yet playing at the level they know they can.

The Lakeville North girl’s basketball team defeated Lakeville South 56-21 on Friday night at Lakeville North High School. Although it was a 35 point win, Lakeville North Head Coach Andy Berkvam was unhappy with his team’s play. “We played how we practiced on Wednesday and Thursday, which wasn’t good,” Berkvam said. “We were sloppy and we weren’t ready to play.” Early on, the Panthers deployed their full-court press, which troubled the Cougars and made them turn the ball over. Both teams played sloppy early on, but North managed to capitalize on South turnovers. North made a strong run towards the end of the first half, and with less than five minutes remaining, North lead by 20 points, 29-9. North standout and University of Minnesota …

Panther Girls Victorious Over Rosemount

Although North played sloppy at times, they are happy with another conference win.

The Lakeville North girl’s basketball team defeated Rosemount 67-49 on Thursday night at Rosemount High School. It was a win for the Panthers, but it wasn’t pretty. Early on, and at times throughout the game, North fell victim to sloppy play and turning the ball over. After an uneasy start against an Irish squad that found energy early, the Panthers came to life and started doing what they do best, play pressure defense. “We had a very sloppy start and I wasn’t happy with our defense,” Lakeville North Head Coach Andy Berkvam said. “During the last ten minutes of the first half we played well and got after them.” During the last ten minutes of the first half, North’s full court press started to affect the Irish and forced them into …

North Dominates Burnsville in South Suburban Matchup

Hot shooting and tenacious defense deliver a convincing victory over the Blaze.

The Lakeville North girl’s basketball team defeated Burnsville handily, 76-28 on Tuesday night. The Panthers showed once again that they are one of the top teams in the state by shooting well from the field and playing tenacious defense. “I thought we did a good job defensively,” Lakeville North Head Coach Andy Berkvam said. “We like to create everything off our defense, and everyone played their role well.” The Panthers started the game in a full-court press and pressured a Burnsville team that struggled to get the ball up the floor without their starting point guard in the lineup. Forced turnovers on defense and accurate shooting on the offensive end gave the Panthers a 20-2 run to start the game. And the lead would only widen. With five…

Lakeville North Girls Basketball Seeks a Repeat State Championship

The Panther girls are putting the pieces together for another state tournament run.

Last March, the Lakeville North High School girls basketball team was cutting down the nets at the Target Center after winning the third state championship in the history of the program and the first since 2004 and the high school split into North and South. The Panthers' state titles came back-to-back in 2001 and 2002, and North coach Andy Berkvam isn't ready to say that championship No. 4 will be coming in a similar fashion this season. "No," he said simply. "Not yet." While North returns a squad full of talent, it is a long way back to the top. The team learned this when its 32-game winning streak came to end in an 83-64 loss to Hopkins on Saturday, Dec. 4. The decisive defeat knocked the Panthers out of the top spot in the Class 4A …
