Census Data: Where Are Dakota County Residents Going?

A new U.S. Census Bureau map of migration patterns between counties shows Dakota County residents leaving for other Minnesota counties in droves.

Dakota County stole 14 residents from Idaho’s Ada County between 2006 and 2010. Meanwhile, it lost 25 people to Honolulu County in Hawaii during the same time period. A U.S. Census Bureau interactive map that went live Tuesday emphasizes just how far flung movements are between the 384,000-person county and the rest of the country. During the survey period, 7,266 people moved to Dakota County from a different state while 8,772 people moved from here to a different state. Movement wasn’t limited to the United States either. Dakota County had 2,002 people move in from abroad. Of course, migration was biggest within Minnesota—and Dakota County saw almost 10,000 more people leave than come in. Census Survey Suggests Lakeville is Changing As Much As It’s Growing

Lakeville became home to more than 10,000 new people over the past 10 years, and that growth has doubled some segments of the community’s population, from seniors to non-English speaking families.

When he arrived in town in 2001, Lakeville schools Superintendent Gary Amoroso recalls the district having "50 or 60" students in English Language Learner programs throughout the district. Today, the number is closer to 300 students, Amoroso said. "If you say the population is growing and shifting, we need to maximize opportunities for all children," Amoroso said. And so, over the years, the Lakeville Area Public School District added ELL staff to provide resources to work with those children, Amoroso said. It's just one of many examples of how Lakeville is a changing community, as much as a growing one.
