South boys hockey wins third straight since Eagan debacle with 5-2 defeat of Eastview at Hasse Arena.
What a difference a week makes. Since hitting its low-water mark in a 10-0 loss to Eagan on Jan. 27 at Hasse Arena, the Lakeville South boys hockey team outscored the next three teams it played by a combined tally of 25-6. The latest of those contests, a home matchup against South Suburban Conference rival Eastview on Thursday night, again went convincingly to the Cougars in a 5-2 victory. "We're playing better — tonight wasn't our best effort, but it still was good, " South coach Kurt Weber said. "After the Eagan game we had a heart-to-heart with the players and I think they learned some lessons from that game." Saturday saw the Lakeville South boys hockey team bounce back from its worst loss of the season with one of its most convincing victories, while the Cougars girls hockey team also claimed a narrow win and boys swim/dive squad competed in a state meet. Saturday was a good night for the Lakeville area girls hockey teams as both squads claimed victories in their respective South Suburban Conference matchups. South Girls Hockey: Cougars 5, Burnsville 2 The Lakeville South girls hockey team held onto its two-game lead in the South Suburban Conference with a 5-2 road win at Burnsville. Lakeville South fans caught a case of double vision on Saturday as both the Cougars boys and girls defeated Apple Valley by identical scores while the Lakeville North boys hockey team lost a third-period lead in a defeat at Rosemount. The eyes of Lakeville were on Ames Arena on as South topped North in the first of two cross-town boys hockey rivalry games, however, Panthers and Cougars hoopsters were also in action both home and away as the winter season rolled on Thrusday night. Throughout the game the Cougars executed an offensive aggressiveness that landed them seven goals and numerous opportunities in front of the net. "We went to the net pretty well,” Lakeville South Head Coach Kurt Weber said. “We knew they didn’t have their best goalie in and that we would have the opportunity to put some pucks in the net.” The South squad attacked early and often. The Lakeville South boy’s hockey team tied Bloomington Jefferson 6-6 on Thursday night after time ran out in overtime at Lakeville’s Hasse Arena. The Cougars led for most of the game, but the Jaguars fought back, slapping in four goals during the third period to knot it up at six. “They have some kids that can play,” Lakeville South Head Coach Kurt Weber said. “Like us, they play a lot of good teams, so we know they are going to battle and come back.” The South squad saw more even play from all three lines during this South Suburban Conference matchup. Lakeville South goes through six shootout rounds to finally overtake Roseville to take in Silver Division fifth-place game.
As if three games in three days and an overtime session in the consolation championship contest weren't enough, the Lakeville South boys hockey team had to go through six shootout rounds to finally put Roseville away, 6-5, to earn fifth place in the Schwan Cup Silver Division Tournament on Friday night. "That was a fun way to end," coach Kurt Weber said. For the Cougars, who entered the tournament with a 1-3record and lost an opening round tournament game, 6-5, to Cretin-Derham Hall on Wednesday, what became a successful Schwan Cup appearance was more about experience than the shiny trophy the team hauled off the ice at the Schwan Super Rink in Blaine. It was an easy road to victory for the Lakeville South boys hockey team on Thursday night, but the same could not be said for the Lakeville North boys basketball and hockey squads as both lost their midweek matchups. South boys hockey: Cougars 9, Bloomington Kennedy 0 Cougars forward Calvin Boecker scored just 1:53 into the first period and Lakeville South rolled to a 9-0 win against Bloomington Kennedy at Hasse Arena. Forwards Alex Harvey and Justin Kloos each had hat tricks and three assists to lead the blowout victory. Boecker scored twice and forward Michael Chuinard scored a goal.
