The mayor discussed Lakeville’s future and present “through the lens of its enduring past.” He illustrated Lakeville as a figurative town square; “Whether from the business, nonprofit, or public sectors, each of you has played a crucial role in building Lakeville’s present strength. As we move forward, we must all work together to build Lakeville’s bright future,” he said. He explained “this vision of my hometown may seem old fashioned but it’s important to me: …

Sunday we get to spring ahead by winding the clocks forward an hour for Daylight Saving Time.
Hey, Lakeville: it's nearly time to 'Spring Forward.' At 2 a.m. on the morning of Sunday, March 10, we'll be springing our clocks forward—and losing an hour of the day, for Daylight Saving Time. The good news: sunset will be an hour later. You may have noticed the annual tradition of Daylight Saving Time has crept forward a bit. We used to spring forward on the first Sunday in April and fall back on last Sunday in October. But a couple years ago, Congress changed the date—adding more Daylight Saving Time to the calendar. This year, it will run from March 10 until Nov. 3. Unless you're in Arizona, Hawaii, Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands. They don't do Daylight Saving Time. Around the world, about 75 countries and territories have at …

Roz Peterson was named School Board chair at Tuesday night's meeting—which was also the first for Board Member-elect Terry Lind.
Every year, during its first January meeting, Lakeville's School Board elects a new chair—a leader to steer the board for the coming year. Whether there has been an election or not, each year the board discusses, nominates, then votes for a new chair. And on Jan. 8, for the first time in six years, a new leader emerged. Roz Peterson was selected by the board as the 2013 School Board chair, a post Judy Keliher has had since 2006. The change wasn't a surprise—Keliher said last year when she was nominated and voted as chair, that she would likely be stepping aside to allow Peterson—who had challenged unsuccessfully for the post in 2011—to take the reigns. Peterson will serve as chair, with Board Member Jim Skelly serving as vice-chair. …

The first meteor shower of 2013 ends tomorrow.
The Quadrantid meteor shower is named for an extinct constellation, but the shooting stars that seem to sprout from it still arrive yearly, and the opening of the 2013 show will begin overnight Jan. 1 into Jan. 2, with a peak on Jan. 3. The Quadrantids is one of the lesser-known meteor showers of the year, but that doesn't mean it's anything less than spectacular. Take a look at this Quadrantids meteor shower video or these pictures of the Quadrantids. While the shower begins overnight on the first day of the new year, NASA tells us Quadrantid meteor shower peaks in the wee morning hours of Jan. 4: "(The) Quadrantids have a maximum rate of about 100 per hour, varying between 60-200. The waxing gibbous moon will set around 3 a.m. local time…
Have you resolved to have a family movie night each week? Take more time for yourself? Share your 2013 resolutions in the comments section below.
I make new resolutions every year. There's something about Jan. 1 that makes me want to start some things fresh. And usually I'm able to stick to about half of them—like giving up watermelon for the month of February or taking a nap once a week. (Wink) Try as I might, I haven't been able to convince myself that a gym is a great place to be three times a week—however, I'll give it another shot in 2013. Patch wants to know what resolutions you've made for the new year. Have you vowed to have a family movie night each week? Take a family vacation to Yellowstone National Park? Make a standing date with your partner? Or maybe you've decided to count to three before yelling at your clumsy nine-year-old for breaking yet another glass dish. Tell …
