On Whole, Lakeville Didn't Support Marriage Amendment

It's no longer news that the state defeated the proposed marriage amendment, but it could be considered news that the majority of Lakeville voters—considered some of the most conservative in the state—also voted against it. After looking at all the precincts in Lakeville, the marriage amendment was defeated 51.01 percent (16,345 votes) to 48.58 percent (15,565 votes). On the flip side, the voter ID amendment was heavily favored in Lakeville, despite being defeated by the state. Voters in Lakeville preferred the amendment 57.3 percent to 42.06 percent—a 15 point difference. 'Blue Wave' Sweeps Republicans from Minnesota House, Senate

Democrats say the divisive amendments and the state shutdown may have contributed to heavy Republican losses.

  After just two years at the helm of the Minnesota Legislature, Republicans lost control of both the House and Senate on Tuesday night—a defeat at least some Democrats are attributing in part to the marriage and Voter ID amendments. Going into Election Day, Republicans controlled the House 72-61 and the Senate 37-30. While votes in some districts were still being counted early Wednesday, Republicans conceded that they lost both majorities in the early morning hours, according to Twin Cities media reports. The two sparred in an on-air debate hosted by MPR on Monday morning. It was the first and only debate in the Second Congressional District race.

Second Congressional District challenge Mike Obermueller (DFL) lobbed plenty of criticism at incumbent Rep. John Kline (R) during the first and only debate between the two candidates on Monday morning. Obermueller, who is seeking to unseat Kline in the newly competitive congressional district, called the five-term legislator part of a "broken system" during the hour-long debate, which was aired by MPR and moderated by host Kerri Miller. "John, you’ve voted 95 or 96 percent of the time with your party, that’s more partisan than Michele Bachmann," Obermueller said. “The system is hopelessly broken, the way you guys are running it now." Eagan resident Mike Obermueller, a Democrat running against incumbent Rep. John Kline (R), spent approximately $150,000 on the ad.

Second Congressional District challenger Mike Obermueller, a Democrat, released his first televised campaign advertisement earlier this week. The ad, which cost the Obermueller campaign $150,000 to run, draws a tongue-in-cheek comparison between Washington D.C. and an overstaffed, inefficient pizza parlor. Obermueller, an Eagan resident, is campaigning against incumbent Rep. John Kline (R), of Lakeville. "Democrats don’t want to cut wasteful spending and Republicans are just as wasteful when they want more tax breaks for millionaires," Obermueller said in the advertisement.

Minnesota AFL-CIO Endorses Obermueller, House, Senate Candidates

Second Congressional District Democratic candidate Mike Obermueller is challenging Republican Rep. John Kline this year.

Eagan resident Mike Obermueller, who is challenging Rep. John Kline (R), Lakeville, for control of the Second Congressional District this year, nabbed a political endorsement from Minnesota's largest labor federation on Thursday. The Minnesota AFL-CIO announced Thursday morning that it is endorsing Obermueller, a Democrat and former state representative. Obermueller was just one of Democratic candidates to be named in the AFL-CIO's first round of endorsements. Additional endorsements will be announced in the coming weeks as the endorsement process continues.
