Lakeville Businesses Urge City to Cut 2011 Budget, Reduce Taxes
City's annual Truth in Taxation hearing drew a large, vocal business crowd this year. Their message was clear, despite a flat property levy proposal: cut taxes.
While the city portion of property taxes for the majority of Lakeville's home and business owners will be going down slightly in 2011, many people aren't satisfied. A large crowd turned out for the city's Truth in Taxation hearing last week to plead with the City Council to do more to ease their tax burden. The 1 percent decrease in their taxes simply isn't enough, many said. The hearing usually draws just a hand-full of people. But this year, more than 35 residents and business owners were compelled to tell the City Council how they felt. "As you take comments tonight, and as you take action in the future, just another plea: the reality for a lot of our small business… they're seeing decreases of 15 to 30 percent in revenues right now," …
