Wind Chill in Lakeville, Minnesota Cities Could Reach Between 40 and 60 Below

A wind chill warning is currently in effect from Saturday evening through Tuesday afternoon.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has warned of extremely cold temperatures starting Saturday, Jan. 4.

A wind chill warning is in effect for Dakota County, as well as for the rest of central and southern Minnesota, from 6 p.m. Saturday through 12 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7.

According to the NWS

"A number of all time cold record highs may be broken on Monday including in the Twin Cities Metro. Gusty west or northwest winds combined with these extremely cold air temperatures will produce wind chilld of 40 to 60 below with the coldest readings expected Sunday Night into Monday morning."

In wind chills of 35 below, the NWS warns that exposed flesh can freeze in 10 minutes. In wind chills of 50 below the time shortens to five minutes.

Due to the extreme cold, Governor Dayton ordered the closing of public schools for Monday, Jan. 6. There are private schools that will also close on Monday.
