Sports Roundup: North Girls Soccer Wins South Suburban Title

Panthers roar through undefeated regular season, take No. 1 ranking into playoffs.

The regular season came to an end for and soccer teams on Thursday, with the Panthers and Cougars girls tennis teams also advancing in their sectional bracket as both school's began to shift into post-season mode.

North Girls Soccer

With a South Suburban Conference championship already in hand following a 2-1 overtime win over fourth-ranked Burnsville on Tuesday, the North girls soccer team—ranked first in Class AA—took a victory lap of sorts with a 1-0 home win against Bloomington Jefferson on Thursday.

The Panthers won their first South Suburban crown by 1 1/2 games over Eagan, with North posting a 14-0-2 overall record and a 7-0-2 conference mark.

Sarah Fisco scored the Panthers goal against the Jaguars, with Alexa Trakalo netting both goals—including the overtime game-winner—versus the Blaze.

North goalkeeper Alexis Joyce wrapped the regular season with 10 shutouts and 67 saves on 72 shots.

Seedings for the Section 1AA Tournament have not been announced, but the Panthers are a mortal lock for the top seed and home-pitch advantage in the bracket. With the No. 1 seed, North would open at home at 7 p.m. on Oct. 13, a win advances North to the semifinals on Oct. 15 at 1 p.m. The finals scheduled for Oct. 18 at 7 p.m.

South Girls Soccer

A 4-0 win at Bloomington Kennedy on Thursday gave the South girls soccer team a .500 record in conference play as the Cougars now prepare for the post-season.

Individual statistics were not made available. South posted a 10-4-2 overall record and a 4-4-1 mark in the South Suburban, with an opening-round Section 1AA game at 7 p.m. Oct. 13.

North Boys Soccer

Back-to-back losses to Burnsville (2-1 Tuesday) and Bloomington Jefferson (4-1, Thursday) dropped the North boys soccer team to 8-5-2 overall to conclude the regular season, with the Panthers finishing in a sixth-place conference tie with defending state champion Apple Valley as both squads posted a 4-4-1 circuit mark.

Tyler David led North with eight goals in the regular season, followed by Joey Decklever with six goals and Toby Khounviseth with five goals.

Up next for the Panthers is the Section 1AA Tournament, slated to run in four rounds from Oct. 11-18.

South Boys Soccer

The South boys soccer team will take a three-game winless streak into the playoffs as the Cougars lost 3-0 at Jefferson on Tuesday and 3-1 at Kennedy on Thursday. 

Cody Rainford led South with three goals during the regular season, followed by Jordan Stoltz, David Mattia and Mike Shaw with two goals apiece.

Up next for the Cougars is the Section 1AA Tournament, slated to run in four rounds from Oct. 11-18.

North Girls Tennis

The North girls tennis team topped Northfield, 7-0, in the second round of the Section 1AA Tournament on Thursday. Individual statistics were not made available. 

South Girls Tennis

The South girls tennis team defeated Owatonna, 5-2, in the second round of the Section 1AA Tournament on Thursday. Individual statistics were not made available.

North Girls Swimming and Diving

The North girls swimming and diving team topped Rosemount, 98-87, on Thursday. Individual statistics were not made available.

South Girls Swimming and Diving

The South girls swimming and diving team defeated Eagan, 96-89, on Thursday. Individual statistics were not made available.

North Volleyball

The No. 2-ranked North volleyball team lost 3-0 to No. 3 Jefferson on Thursday, falling to 16-3 on the season. Individual statistics were not made available.

South Volleyball

The sixth-ranked South volleyball team defeated Kennedy 3-0 on Thursday to improve to 22-1 on the season. Individual statistics were not made available.
