South claimed a 3-0 first-period lead on two goals from forward Alex Harvey that sandwiched a score from Brevig, before the Lightning rallied to score three times in the middle frame to draw even.

Both teams exchanged goals in the third period — forward Justin Kloos scoring for the visitors — to send the contest into the extra session before Brevig ended it.

The Cougars finished off the South Suburban schedule with a 12-5-1 conference mark as the team takes a 14-8-2 overall record into the Section 1A playoffs.

Seedings for the sectional bracket have yet to be announced, with the playoffs scheduled to begin next Tuesday night.
