Saxton Wins Boys State Nordic Ski Title; Panthers Girls Sixth

Big day for Lakeville North at championship meet at Giants Ridge on Thursday.

It was a big day for Lakeville North Nordic skiing as the Ben Saxton  was crowned the state boys champion while the Panthers took sixth place in the girls team competition on a day that also saw Lewis Kunik and Danny Hanson represent their school at state.

Three members of the Lakeville South Nordic squad — Jake Panzer, Maggie Singer, Jane Kirby — also competed individually at the state meet, held at Giants Ridge in Biwabik on Thursday.

Saxton skied away with the boys championship by nearly nine seconds after posting a total pursuit time of 29 minutes, 5.7 seconds. The North junior recorded a freestyle time of 13:50 and a classical time of 15:15.7 to roll to the title.

Fellow Panthers Kunik and Hanson took 17th and 69th, respectively. Kunik, a junior put up a with a pursuit time of 31:09.3 (14:29 freestyle, 16:40.3 classical), while Hanson, a senior, concluded his high school career with a 32:56 (15:42, 17:14).

South senior Jake Panzer placed 24th with a 31:25.7 after a 14:49 in the freestyle and 16:36.7 in the classical.

North Girls Take Sixth; Ferguson Places Fifth

The Lakeville North girls took sixth-place in the team standings with 326 points, led by Michelle Ferguson's fifth-place individual result.

Ferguson paced the Panthers with a pursuit time of 32:51.5, posting a 15:01 in the freestyle and 17:50.5 in the classical.

The North senior was followed by teammates Amanda Wilson (35:35.8 pursuit; 15:48 freestyle, 19:47.8 classical) in 35th, Amy Ferguson (36:34.5; 16:10, 20:24.5) in 57th, Nicole Naatjes (37:01.8; 16:53, 20:08.8) in 68th, Sara Nelson (38:55.6; 17:39, 21:16.6) in 100th, Cassie Nickisch (40:43.6; 18:55, 21:48.6) in 110th and Julia Bodnaruk (42:13.6; 18:54, 23:19.6) in 113th.

South junior Maggie Singer came in 95th in 38:30.3 (17:31, 20:59.3), with senior Jane Kirby placing 106th in 40:20.7 (17:46, 22:34.7).
