Lakeville Sports Roundup: North Nordic Girls Headed To State

Panthers top Cougars in Section 1 championship meet; Saxton, Kunik, Hanson and Panzer qualify for state in boys sectional.

It was nearly a perfect afternoon for the Lakeville North Nordic ski teams on Tuesday as the Panthers will be sending several competitors to the state meet as the girls won the Section 1 title and the boys took second to highlight the day's athletic schedule.

North/South Girls Nordic Skiing: Panthers First, Cougars Second In Section 1

The Lakeville North girls Nordic ski team is on its way to the state meet by winning the Section 1 championship at Valleywood Golf Course.

North recorded 389 points, with Lakeville South accumulating 359 points for second place.

Headed to state for the Panthers are: Michelle Ferguson, Amanda Wilson, Amy Ferguson, Nicole Naatjes, Sara Nelson, Julia Bodnaruk and Cassie Nickisch.

The Cougars will be represented at state by Jane Kirby, Maddie Singer and Meghan Barry, who qualified individually by finishing in the top-10 positions not taken by a team qualifying competitor.

The girl's state meet is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 17 at Giants Ridge in Biwabik.

North/South Boys Nordic Skiing: Three Panthers, One Cougar Qualify For State

The Lakeville North and South boys Nordic ski teams placed second and third, respectively, at the Section 1 meet after tallying 372 and 345 points, respectively.

Three Panthers and one Cougar qualified for state as North's Ben Saxton, Lewis Kunik and Danny Hanson joined South's Jake Panzer as top-10 sectional finishers.

The boy's state meet is also scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 17 at Giants Ridge in Biwabik.

North/South Girls Alpine Skiing: Cougars' Adams, Larson Headed To State

Lakeville South's Hayleigh Adams and Amanda Larson qualified for the state alpine ski meet after placing in the top-10 individually at the Section 6 championship at Buck Hill.

Adams took fifth among those that did not qualify for state on a team with a time of 45.67 seconds, while Larson logged a time of 46.45 to take ninth.

In the team results, Lakeville North placed fourth with 437 points, yet did not claim any individual qualifiers; South came in seventh with 418 points.

Giants Ridge hosts the girl's state meet on Wednesday, Feb. 16.

North/South Boys Alpine Skiing: Croasdale, Xi, Schwegman Qualify For State

Two members of the Lakeville North and one racer from the Lakeville South are on their way to state with qualifying performances in the Section 1 meet.

North finished fourth in the team standings with 434 points, while South placed sixth with 386.

The Panthers will be represented at state with Connor Croasdale, who took in the individual standings with a time of 42.03 and Matt Xi, who took ninth in 43.78; the Cougars' Jonathan Schwegman also made the state cut with a tenth-place sectional result of 43.90.

Giants Ridge also hosts the boy's state meet on Wednesday, Feb. 16.

North Girls Basketball: Panthers 64, Bloomington Kennedy 50

The Lakeville North girls basketball team remained perfect in the South Suburban Conference with a 64-50 home win versus Bloomington Kennedy to improve to 13-0 in circuit play and 19-2 overall.

Rachel Banham led all scorers with 25 points, while Panthers teammates Apiew Ojulu and McKenzie Hoelmenn each notched 14 points apiece.

North travels to SSC No. 2 Eastview on Friday night at 7:15 p.m.

South Girls Basketball: Apple Valley 80, Cougars 48

An 80-48 loss at Apple Valley dropped the Lakeville South girls basketball team to 1-20 overall and 0-13 in the South Suburban.

The Cougars'  Maddie Turbes and Kelsey Thulien recorded 14 and 13 points, respectively, in the defeat.

South hosts Rosemount at 7:30 p.m. Thursday night.

North Boys Basketball: Panthers 55, Bloomington Kennedy 51

The Lakeville North boys basketball team fell to 8-11 overall and 6-5 in the South Suburban with a 55-51 loss at Bloomington Kennedy.

Adam Petterson led the Panthers with 16 points, while teammate Tyler Flack chipped in 12 points in the defeat.

North hosts South Suburban co-leader Eastview on Friday at 7:15 p.m.

Results were not available for the Lakeville South gymnastics meet on Tuesday.
