Lakeville Sports Roundup: Cougars, Panthers Win Sectional Openers

Section 1AA girls hockey playoffs commence on Friday with Lakeville South and North each coasting to 4-1 first-round victories.

Both the Lakeville South and North girls hockey teams opened Section 1A Tournament play with identical 4-1 victories on Friday night to highlight a weekend that also saw the South boys thump North on Saturday evening.

South Girls Hockey: Cougars 4, Winona 1

A three-goal second period busted open a deadlocked contest as the Lakeville South girls hockey team topped Winona, 4-1, at on Friday night.

Two goals by Morgan Fritz-Ward and one score apiece from Mara Post and Sam Moore countered the Winhawks' lone tally against the Cougars and Chelsea Laden, who made 10 saves in the victory.

South hosts Owatonna on Tuesday night at 7 p.m., with the victor advancing to the Section 1A final at the Owatonna Four Seasons Center on Friday night.

North Girls Hockey: Panthers 4, Rochester Mayo 1

The Lakeville North girls hockey team never trailed in defeating Rochester Mayo, 4-1, in its first sectional game on Friday at Ames Arena.

Alli Harvey scored twice with teammates Alexis Joyce and Christi Vetter each lighting the lamp once as the Panthers put 36 shots on goal in the win while North's Dani Dexter needed to make just eight saves for the victory.

The Panthers host Farmington on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. with the winner moving on to the sectional final at the Owatonna Four Seasons Center on Friday night.

South/North Boys Hockey: Cougars 6, Panthers 1

The Lakeville South boys hockey team completed a season sweep over Lakeville North with a second five-goal victory, 6-1, at Hasse Arena on Saturday.

The Panthers got two goals from Justin Kloos and single scores from John Wiitala, Joe Freemaker, Drew Brevig and Ethan Quinnell to counter a lone tally from the Panthers' Erik Rutt in the contest; Brady Frahm made 21 saves for South, Charlie Lindgren stopped 30 shots for North.

While the Cougars improved to 13-7-2 overall and 11-4-1 in the South Suburban Conference with the victory, the defeat dropped the Panthers to 9-13-1 all told and 6-10 in the circuit.

South travels to Apple Valley for a 7:15 p.m. contest on Tuesday, while North hosts the Eagles at 7 p.m. on Thursday night.

North Boys Basketball: Panthers 53, Eastview 43

A 53-43 home win over then-SSC co-leader Eastview upped the Lakeville North Boys Basketball team's record to 9-11 overall and 7-5 in the conference.

The Panthers' Adam Peterson tied for the game-high in scoring with 17 points, while Tyler Flack recorded 12 points in the victory.

North travels to take on another conference co-leader with a trip to Eagan for a 7:15 p.m. tip-off on Tuesday.

North Girls Basketball: Panthers 66, Eastview 48

The Lakeville North girls basketball team improved to 20-2 overall and 14-0 in the South Suburban with a 66-40 win at Eastview on Friday.

Apiew Ojulu led all scorers with 23 points, with Rachel Banham and Jaya Perkins scoring 23 and 12 points, respectively.

North hosts Eagan at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday night.

South Girls Basketball: Rosemount 66, Cougars 49

The Lakeville South girls basketball team lost, 66-49, at home to Rosemount on Friday to fall to 1-21 overall and 0-14 in the SSC.

Brianna Meier and Kelsey Thulien both logged 14 points apiece in the loss as the Pantehrs next travel to Prior Lake for a 7:15 p.m. start on Tuesday.

Results were not available for the Lakeville North and South boys swim/dive and wrestling teams that were in action over the weekend.
