North boys hockey loses in the Iron Range; South bests North in Lakeville holiday tournament.

Local basketball and hockey teams wasted little time coming off the short Christmas break as several Lakeville North and South teams were back in action on Tuesday.

Forward Tristan Hazlett gave North the initial advantage with a goal just 42 seconds into the game, yet the hosts tied the score at 1-1 before the first period ended and scored  two goals to the Panthers one—recorded by forward Blake Winiecki—in the second period to take a lead that would not be relinquished.

Both teams recorded one final tally in the third period, with North's coming from forward Charlie Hayes, before Virginia skated off with the final victory.

The Lakeville South boys invitational opened in grand style with a "Civil War" game between North and South, with the Cougars coming out on top by a 72-56 score.

South led throughout, holding a 41-31 halftime edge before winning by 16 points to improve to 2-2 on the season. The loss dropped North to 0-6 on the season.

Alex Richter led all scorers with 27 points, while Cougars' teammate Riley West accounted for 17 points. Al Erickson and Tyler Flack tied for the Cougars' scoring lead with 14 points each.

South plays Shakopee in the second round at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday night, after North takes on Blaine at 6 p.m.

North Girls Basketball: Panthers 76, Rochester Lourdes 70

The Lakeville North girls basketball team won its opening game of the Rochester Rotary Tournament, defeating Rochester Lourdes, 76-70, at the Mayo Civic Center to improve to 6-2 on the year.

Individual statistics from the matchup were not available. Tournament play resumes Wednesday and continues through Thursday.

South Girls Basketball: Roseville 70, Cougars 28

Roseville proved to be a rude guest as the Raiders throttled host Lakeville South, 70-28, in the Cougars' holiday tournament.

South trailed 35-20 at halftime and could muster up just eight points in the final 18 minutes en route to the loss that dropped the team's record to 1-7 this winter. Breanna Meier led the way for the home side with 10 points in the game.

The Cougars host Holy Angels in second-round play at 11 a.m. Wednesday morning.
