Lakeville South Girl’s Soccer Weathers Comeback to get Victory

The Cougars win their final home game of the regular season, 3-2, after enduring a second-half comeback by the visiting Minneapolis South Tigers.

There was plenty of South pride on a windy Thursday night as both the Cougars and Tigers experienced moments of strong soccer. just had more of them.

The scoring started nine minutes into the game when Lakeville South midfielder Nicole Ekegren boomed in a goal after a corner kick.

The Cougars struck again halfway into the first half when Hannah Brown smashed a pass right in front of the net, only to have Mikayla Jacobson tap the ball behind her back and into the goal.

And the Cougars didn’t waste much more time in scoring their third goal of the night. Kelly Molitor scored a header off of a Lexi Bernauer corner kick to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead, which they took into halftime.

However, the second half started out differently. The Minneapolis South Tigers came out ready to play and quickly got their first goal of the night when Claire Ruegg kicked one into the upper left part of the net.

The Tigers attacked again a couple minutes later when they legged in a rebound to cut the Cougar lead to one goal, 3-2.

But the Cougars turned up the heat just in time to keep the Tigers from scoring another goal. They started to pass better and move the ball down the field to keep the ball in the Tiger’s zone.

“Once they got their second goal we really took the game back over,” Lakeville South Head Coach Dan Flood said. “If we can keep the ball on the ground and move it, we are a hard team to play against.”

In the future, the Cougars have to learn to play all 80 minutes of the game, according to Flood. They have to finish better, which Flood said has been their Achilles heel all season.

The win puts the Cougars at 9-3-2 on the season. They take on the Jaguars next on Tuesday, October 4 at 4:30 p.m. at Bloomington Jefferson High School.
