Lakeville North Beats South to Claim Section 1AA Crown, Trip to State

This is the second season in three years North has earned a berth to the State Boys High School Hockey Tournament.

The Lakeville North boys hockey team is headed back to State.

North's boys hockey team beat Lakeville South 6-3 on Thursday night in the Section 1AA finals to earn its second section title in three years.

It's too soon to say who the Panthers will meet in the quarterfinals of the State Boys High School Hockey Tournament next Thursday, March 7 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

Jack Diercks and Nick Poehling each had two goals for North and Will Dupont had 36 saves in the win.

ORIGINAL STORY (3:15 p.m., Feb. 28)

Tonight, Lakeville's two varsity boys hockey teams will meet for the third straight season in the Section 1AA championship game. On the line: a trip to the State Boys High School Hockey Tournament.

No. 1 Lakeville North (10-16-1) will face No. 3 Lakeville South (11-16-0) at 7 p.m. at the Rochester Recreation Center.

It's the third time this year the two teams will meet, with South taking the first match-up on Dec. 20 by a score of 5-1, and North winning the second game 7-2 on Feb. 2.

Two years ago in the Section 1AA final, North stunned the Cougars in triple overtime by a score of 1-0, on the back of star goaltender Charlie Lindgren. Last year, , beat North and went to state where they pulled off a massive upset victory and beat Duluth East in the first round.
