Lakeville North Prevails 4 - 3, in 3OT to Win Consolation

The Panthers came from behind in a marathon-like triple-overtime game to defeat White Bear Lake for the Class AA Consolation Championship.

 

The Lakeville North boys hockey team finished its season strong Saturday, beating White Bear Lake 4-3 in triple overtime to claim the Class AA consolation championship.

The Panthers (15-15-1) won two straight games to end the state tournament—their first two wins at state since splitting into two schools in 2005. Coach Randy Schmitz said after Thursday’s quarterfinal that finishing the tournament strong would go a long way toward the program’s success in the future.

North did everything it could to make that happen. After on Friday, the Panthers battled back from a 3-1 deficit on Saturday to win the consolation bracket.

Evan Peterson tied the game 1-1 in the second period, but White Bear Lake (22-7-2) came back with two late goals to send them into the second intermission up 3-1.

Lakeville North’s charlie Hayes and Gordon Kappers each scored to force overtime, and then Peterson notched his second goal of the game 15 seconds into the third extra session to give the Panthers the win.

Panthers goalie Charlie Lindgren made 39 saves on the night.
