Lakeville Native Top Rookie at Crashed Ice

Cameron Naasz, a 2008 alumnus of Lakeville South High, placed 24th in the field of more than 160 competitors in the Red Bull Crashed Ice World Championships in St. Paul.

Lakeville native Cameron Naasz made a splash in this weekend’s Red Bull Crashed Ice World Championships in St. Paul.

Naasz, a 2008 Lakeville South High School alumnus who now lives in St. Cloud, won the MINI Rookie Award as the best newcomer in the competition and was the top American finisher. Overall, he placed 24th in the field of more than 160 competitiors.

According to its website, Red Bull Crashed Ice is “a combination of ice hockey, downhill skating and boardercross.” Participants race on a track that features steep turns and vertical drops.

The St. Paul event marks the first time a world championships series event was conducted in the United States. Reports say about 80,000 people attended the event, conducted near the St. Paul Cathedral.

Naasz was one of 19 American racers to make it out of Friday’s first round and advance to Saturday’s action. He came in second in his elimination round race to reach Saturday’s round of 32.

The St. Paul event finals will be broadcast from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, on NBC.
