Lakevile North Football Prevails 30-6 in Cross-town, Rivalry showdown

Lakeville North dominated Lakeville South in the eighth meeting between the two cross-town rivals. Both teams came into the game undefeated, but the Panthers left the game 6-0 on the season.

quarterback Mitch Leidner——has collected most of the attention as one if the premier quarterbacks in the state, and the best in the city of Lakeville. But quarterback Trey Heid reminded Lakeville football fans Friday night that there is another big cat in town.

Heid ran, passed, kicked and ran some more in a 30-6 rout of the Cougars, who came into the game as the fourth-ranked team in Class 5A. If you gave him the chance, he would probably get his teammates water, call the plays on defense and shine your shoes, but he was busy running through the Cougar defense like a hot razor through Gillete Foamy.

“Every coach knows that if you have a quarterback that can throw and run, it feels a little bit like cheating,” Lakeville North Head Coach Brian Vossen said. “I know that because I coach defense. I know how hard it is to stop.”

Heid carried the ball 18 times, notching 97 yards and two touchdowns. He was also 8 for 14 with his arm, with 107 yards and one touchdown pass in the win which gives North the covoted "Cats Trophy."

But Heid wasn’t the only factor in the win against a rival opponent. The strong wind made things difficult for the Cougars do what they do best, pass the ball.

“The wind was a huge factor,” Lakeville South Head Coach Larry Thompson said. “It really tarnished what we wanted to do.”

Big turnovers at important times in the game also hurt Lakeville South. Leidner threw two interceptions during the game, one of them being picked out of the air by North junior Grant Erickson and taken to the end zone. It was a play that seemed to tip a leaning tower in favor of the Panthers. And with five minutes remaining in the third quarter, gave the Panthers an overwhelming amount of momentum going into the final quarter of the rivalry matchup.

Game Recap

The game’s first points came when Heid took a quarterback keeper up the middle of the Cougar defense for 21 yards and a touchdown. It was the only scoring throughout the first quarter. North led 7-0.

North struck again early in the second quarter after they drove the ball down the field with the running game. They settled for a field goal to make the score 10-0.

But the Cougars weren’t going to go into halftime down by double digits. Leidner—after being inaccurate with his arm previously—took South down the field with the passing game. He ended the drive by tossing a touchdown pass to Trent Bertamus, but the extra point was blocked. North went into halftime ahead, 10-6.

After halftime, North continued to dominate the game on the ground. North’s next points came when Heid took a quarterback sweep into the end zone from four yards out. The score was then 17-6.

Then, on South’s next possession, North cornerback Grant Erickson snagged a Leidner ball and ran it 17 yards for the score. This broke the game open. North led 23-6 after a missed extra point.

North drove the final nail into the coffin when Heid threw for the last score of the game late in the fourth quarter.

The performance speaks for itself. The Lakeville South squad didn’t have an answer to Heid’s ability to break out of tackles and run like a psycho for big yardage. Lakeville North took advantage of this, and was most effective when they sent Heid out on the bootleg, where he had the option to throw or run the ball.

He carried the ball 18 times for 97 yards and was 8 for 14 with his arm for 107 yards. He was responsible for all three of the Panther’s touchdowns and proved to prep football fans that he is a game-breaking threat to any defense.
