Sports Roundup: North Hosts Gymnastics Invitational

High school student-athletes are in the midst of their winter sports schedules.

Here is an update on Lakeville high school sports teams:

GYMNASTICS

Today, Lakeville North is hosting what the Minneapolis Star Tribune calls “the best regular-season gymnastics meet of the season,” the Lakeville North Invitational.

In addition to North, taking part in today’s competition are Lakeville South, Prior Lake, Brainerd, Cambridge-Isanti, Eden Prairie, Hopkins, Melrose Area, Northfield, Park, Sauk Rapids-Rice, White Bear Lake Area, Winona, Roseville Area and St. Francis.

BOYS HOCKEY

LAKEVILLE NORTH—The Panthers head into this afternoon’s road game at Eastview with a 7-7 overall mark and 3-4 record in the South Suburban Conference. Today’s game time is at 2:15 p.m. at the Apple Valley Sports Arena.

North evened its overall record with a 5-1 win over conference opponent Rosemount on Thursday night.

LAKEVILLE SOUTH—The Cougars entered a weeklong break in a high note, topping South Suburban Conference foe Apple Valley, 3-2, on Thursday. They stand at 8-5 overall and 4-3 in the conference.

When South returns from its break, it plays a pair of road conference games in three days—at Burnsville on Jan. 19 and conference-leading Eagan on Jan. 21—then returns home to host Eden Prairie on Jan. 24. 

 

GIRLS HOCKEY

LAKEVILLE NORTH—The South Suburban Conference-leading Panthers had its eight-game winning streak snapped Friday night in a 5-1 loss to Benilde-St. Margaret’s.

Alexis Joyce scored North’s lone goal on a power play at the 5:42 mark of the second period.

Joyce is her team’s top scorer, with 17 goals and 32 points overall. She’s followed by Christi Vetter, with 15 goals and 27 points.

North, 13-4-1 overall and 9-1-1 in the conference, will host conference foe Eastview at 3 p.m. today.

LAKEVILLE SOUTH—The Cougars take their 13-4-1 overall record into their home game with Bloomington Kennedy at 2:45 p.m. today. South is in second place in the South Suburban Conference with 7-2-1 mark. Bloomington Kennedy now is 0-6 in conference play.

South improved its record with a 2-1 win over Breck on Friday. Annabeth Smith broke a 1-1 tie with a goal at the 11:25 mark of the second period. Kelsey Olsen and Morgan Morse recorded assists on the winning shot. Dani Beuhrer got South on the board with a goal at the 10:50 mark of the first period, with assists from Morse and Kelli Burstein.

 

BOYS BASKETBALL

LAKEVILLE NORTH—Brett Rasmussen scored 18 points and Tyler Flack added 15 as the Cougars dropped Eagan, 79-65, Thursday night.

The victory got North back in the win column after dropping its first game of the season, a 54-48 loss to South Suburban Conference-leading Eastview on Tuesday. The Cougars are 11-1 overall and 3-1 in the conference, one game behind Eastview.

North will host Burnsville Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.

LAKEVILLE SOUTH—The Cougars evened their overall record at 6-6 with a closely fought 58-55 victory over Prior Lake in South Suburban Conference action Friday night. South trailed by one point in the first half, 33-32, before outscoring Prior Lake, 27-23 after halftime.

Devon Bzoskie led South with 17 points and was followed in double figures by Jordan Johnson, with 11 points, and Ty Powell, with 10.

The Cougars, 1-3 in the conference, will host Bloomington Jefferson at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday. 

 

GIRLS BASKETBALL

LAKEVILLE NORTH—The Panthers outscored Eagan, 33-12, in the second half en route to a 58-32 win over their South Suburban Conference game Friday night.

Taylor Stewart led North—which held a five-point halftime lead— with 14 points. Simone Kolander had 13.

North, 8-6 overall and 4-2 in the conference, will visit Burnsville Tuesday.

LAKEVILLE SOUTH—A second-half charge by Prior Lake was just enough to defeat the Cougars, 53-52, Friday night.

South, 9-5 overall and 4-2 in the South Suburban Conference, led by seven points, 24-17, at halftime.

Scoring in double figures for the Cougars were Grayson Schroder, with 14 points; Maddie Wolkow, 12; and Diamond Miller, 10.

South will visit Bloomington Jefferson Tuesday.
