Lakeville Student Headed to China on State Department Scholarship

Katerina Wong, 16, will graduate from Eastview High School in Apple Valley this spring and travel to China on a state department scholarship.

A precocious Lakeville high school student will be headed to China for a year on a State Department scholarship.

Katerina Wong will graduate from Eastview High School this spring at age 16. She's taken classes for two years through the University of Minnesota.

Her trip will be funded through the National Security Language Initiative for Youth, a program launched in 2006 designed, as stated on its website, "to improve Americans' ability to engage with people from around the world."

Wong was one of 625 students chosen for the program from across the country on the basis of grades, writing samples, personal history and a teacher recommendation. Since the initiative launched, more than 2,500 students have had the opportunity to learn Arabic, Mandarin, Hindi, Korean, Tajik, Russian, and Turkish.
