Lakeville Area Public Schools Closed Monday, Jan. 27

A wind chill warning will be in effect from midnight Monday through Tuesday afternoon.

The cold weather has claimed another school day.

The Lakeville Area Public School District has canceled classes for Monday, Jan. 27. Superintendent Dr. Lisa Snyder wrote the following message to district families.

This message is to alert you that Lakeville Area Public Schools will be closed on Monday, January 27th due to extremely frigid weather conditions and blowing and drifting conditions.

This decision is difficult as there are people who believe we should stay open, and those who feel strongly that we should close for our students' safety. In the end, I consider the National Weather Service's warning level of 20 below coupled with a 40 below wind chill, the liability to our district if there was an accident or injury, the decision of neighboring districts and how long some of our students will be at bus stops, and above all, our students' safety.

Tomorrow will need to be made up by staff and students per our current policies. We are currently considering all options. I have appreciated all the ideas and emails that stakeholders have sent to me on this issue.  Administration will have a recommendation for consideration at the Tuesday, January 28th Board of Education Meeting. I hope to communicate this plan by Wednesday of this week.

Thank you for your patience on this matter. I am very sensitive to the fact that this is very difficult for many families.

District 196 has also canceled school for Monday.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind chill warning from 12 a.m. on Monday until 12 p.m. on Tuesday. Temperatures on Monday are forecast to be 15 to 25 below. Wind chills could be 35 to 50 below.
