Tech Demo and Community Grandparents' Day Celebration

It’s one thing to hear or read about a Nook or an I-Pad, but it’s another thing to actually learn how to use one.   I-Pads are going to be used a lot in classrooms at Lakeville Public Schools this year.

The difference between hearing about a device and being able to actually use it led Eric Baklund, of Troop 111 in Lakeville, to develop an Eagle Scout project that allows people to feel, touch and use a variety of technologies and see a demonstration of them.

The Technology Demonstration will be held at the Lakeville Heritage Library on Sunday, Sept. 9th from 2 – 4:30 p.m.   Sept. 9th is also Grandparents Day so it will also be a community Grandparents’ Day celebration.

“My grandparents are very important to me and they are always asking me questions about the computer.   I figured this would be a great way to help them and others who want to learn about the new technologies,” according to Eric Baklund, soon to be a 9th grader at Lakeville North.   “This way people can learn about I-Pads and I-Pods so when their kids and grandkids are talking about using them in class, you will know what they are talking about.   My Grandma Langer really wants to learn how to use Facebook so I figured a lot of people might want to learn too.

The Tech Demo will have several stations so attendees of any age can learn about Facebook, Twitter, Skype, You Tube, e-mail and answer questions about laptops and navigating the Internet.   Scouts from Troop 111 and other teens will demonstrate devices like I-pods, I-pads, and e-readers such as Nook, Nook Tablet, Kindle and Kindle Fire.   People who attend will have a chance to try out these devices and learn about them.

While most Boy Scouts choose a construct something to benefit their community, Baklund focused on his strength in computers and technology to lead a team to offer this free educational opportunity to the Lakeville community.   Baklund started computer programming in fourth grade when he first started participating in Lego League. Baklund plans to be a computer programmer and developer some day.

“Technology is the future,” said Baklund.   He hopes a lot of people will attend this event and it will bring people in the Lakeville community together as they learn about new technology.   “Ultimately, I want to help people by showing them what’s cool about all of our new technology.   Maybe grandparents or parents want to see what an I-Pad can do before they buy one for their kids.”
