With Government Shutdown Over, Kline Says 'Record-High Debt' Still an Issue

Candidate Mike Obermueller also released a statement, in which he blamed the shutdown on Republican leadership, including Kline.

President Barack Obama signed a bill on Thursday morning that ended the federal government shutdown and raised the debt limit. The Senate and House passed the bill Wednesday night.

U.S. Rep. John Kline issued the following statement regarding his support of the bill:

“Today, members of Congress were asked to make a difficult decision. Ultimately, I was not willing to put the full faith and credit of the United States at risk. Congress and the White House must put country first. The result was imperfect, but it was a temporary solution I believed was in the best interest of Americans.

“Moving forward, we must address runaway spending, the debt, and failed policies like ObamaCare... Our record-high debt is as much the result of failed leadership as it is failed policies that grew government instead of our economy. We must tackle the pressing issues Americans sent us to Washington to face.”

Mike Obermueller, who plans to run against Kline next year, issued his own statement:

“I’m glad to see that the present crisis has come to an end... But let’s not forget that Congressman Kline orchestrated this shut down—he voted to shut down the government and he's part of the so-called Republican leadership team who for the past 16 days has consistently rejected efforts to get it back up and running... We need a representative that will do what’s best for the country every day, not just when it’s politically convenient.”
