Meeting Preview: After Mixup, City Will Hold Unofficial Tax Hearing

A special reception will be held at 6 p.m. Monday for Mayor Mark Bellows and Councilor Laurie Rieb—both of whom are participating in their final City Council meetings—which will begin at 7 p.m.

A mix-up by the city of Lakeville and Dakota County resulted in residents getting the wrong date printed on their 2012 tax statements for the city's 2012 Truth in Taxation hearing. As a result, the city is encouraging residents who want to talk about taxes to attend the Dec. 17 meeting.

The City Council held Lakeville's annual tax hearing during its Dec. 3 meeting, however, tax statements form the county stated the city's Truth in Taxation hearing was scheduled for Dec. 4.

According to a report by Sun Thisweek, a number of residents showed up on Dec. 4 expecting to talk about taxes only to discover City Hall closed and its doors locked.

“This was an unfortunate mistake on our part to which we apologize,” City Administrator Steve Mielke told Sun Thisweek.

Folks who missed the hearing as a result of the mix-up have been encouraged to come to the Monday council meeting. It begins at 7 p.m. at City Hall.

In addition to talking taxes, the City Council is expected to pass the 2013 tax levy and budget—which is going down by .1 percent.

The city is also holding a reception at 6 p.m. at City Hall—just before the regular City Council meeting—to honor Mayor Mark Bellows and Councilor Laurie Rieb, both of whom lost elections in 2012 and will no longer be on the council in 2013.
