Government Shutdown: Kline Says Obamacare Delay is 'About Fairness'

John Kline represents Minnesota's Second Congressional District, which includes Lakeville. Candidate Mike Obermueller calls the shutdown the result of "political games."

The federal government began shutting down nonessential services Tuesday morning. On Monday, U.S. Representative John Kline (R-MN) released a statement ahead of the shutdown, re-emphasizing his support of the House bill that would delay Obamacare for one year. The Senate has rejected that bill multiple times and the two sides have not come to an agreement.

Kline's statement is as follows:

“The House has voted for a third time to keep the government running and protect Americans from the President’s fatally-flawed health care law, while the Senate and White House sit idly by refusing to compromise. This summer, the President delayed for one year ObamaCare’s employer mandate for businesses. I was pleased to support legislation today that protects Minnesota families from ObamaCare as well. This is about fairness. It’s time for the Senate to treat Americans fairly, follow the lead of the ‘People’s House,’ and listen to the will of their constituents.”

Mike Obermueller, who plans to run against Kline in 2014, also released a statement ahead of the shutdown:

“Today, thanks to Congressman Kline, we’re just hours from a government shutdown. Congressman Kline and his leaders in Washington put our economy at risk for the sake of political games... Congressman Kline should be ashamed for keeping his paycheck for not doing his job, even while veterans and seniors face the uncertainty that comes with a government shutdown. We cannot allow Congressman Kline and his leadership to keep putting their extremist agenda ahead of what’s best for this country.”
