Garofalo: School Integration Money to be Redirected to 'Research-Based Activities' Only

Garofalo wants to use "research-based activities" to close the achievement gap, not integration dollars.

State Rep. Pat Garofalo (R-District 36A) of Farmington, says everyone agrees the current system of giving out money to school districts for aiding in racial integration isn't working. So he has authored a bill (HF0934) changing the name of the aid to "innovation revenue" and wants it only used for "research-based activities" to close the achievement gap between minority and white students.

Garofalo gave current examples of what he thought fell outside of his proposal.

"We had districts in the state spending $99,000 on an integration program coordinator. $57,000 on a secretary for the integration program coordinator. Now those sorts of...that sort of spending, that might be good for the adults, and it might take care of the adults, but it's not doing anything for the kids."
