Dave Thompson Gives Up MN Senate Post for Guv Run

The state senator from Lakeville stepped down as assistant minority leader.

State Sen. Dave Thompson (R-Lakeville), who recently announced his candidacy for governor, has left his leadership position at the Minnesota Legislature, according to the Associated Press:


Thompson resigned as assistant minority leader in a Wednesday letter to top Republican senators. In it, Thompson says it would be unwise to continue in the role during his campaign.

The letter didn't exactly explain itself but it may give the addressee something to think about, according to Minnesota Public Radio


Thompson’s letter didn’t specify why he thought it would be unwise to continue in Senate leadership.

The letter comes at a time when Hann is also considering whether he will run for governor. Hann said he will announce his decision by the end of the week. If he chooses to run, Thompson’s letter could put pressure on him to also abandon his leadership post.
