Police: Farmington Man Broke Infant's Leg and Ribs, Other Injuries

A Farmington man accused of abusing his son was so disturbed by investigators' descriptions of the child's severe injuries that he began vomiting, then admitted to the crime, according to police.

Ryan Andrew Gasior, 21, was charged with one felony count of third-degree assault and one felony count of malicious punishment of a child, according to a criminal complaint filed by the Dakota County Attorney's Office. If convicted on the assault charge, Gasior could face a maximum of five years in prison and $10,000 in fines.

Eagan police investigators say Gasior broke the seven-week-old infant's femur,  caused bleeding in the brain and fractured seven of the child's ribs while caring for the boy in January and February.

Eagan police were first contacted on Feb. 17 by a physician at a local hospital. The doctor, who was treating the child for respiratory problems, noticed the child's femur had been fractured twice, with an old, almost-healed fracture located underneath a new break. A CT scan two days later revealed cerebral hemorrhaging on both sides of the child's brain, according to the complaint.

Police spoke with the child's mother, who told officers the boy started screaming in pain three weeks ago when she was changing his diaper, prompting her to bring the child to the hospital. The woman also told police that Gasior, the child's father, had cared for the infant several times in recent weeks.

Police interviewed Gasior three times in February. On Feb. 18, Gasior allegedly told police the boy's injuries may have been caused by the infant's 3-year-old brother.

On Feb. 20, police interviewed Gasior a second time. At points during the interview, police say Gasior was angry and offered various explanations for the injuries. According to the complaint:

When Gasior was informed the infant had blood on his brain, he began to dry heave. Gasior vomited or dry heaved the remainder of the interview.

Police say Gasior later told officers that he "really [expletive] up," then acknowledged that he caused the injuries, began crying and apologized.

In a third interview on Feb. 21, police say Gasior admitted he may have caused the boy's broken leg between Jan. 25 and Jan. 30, when he tossed the infant onto the bed to change the child's diaper. Investigators say he then admitted to squeezing and shaking the boy during separate incidents—causing the rib fractures and cranial bleeding.

Gasior also told the detective that he was stressed at work and frustrated at the boy's mother, according to the complaint.

Gasior is currently being held in the Dakota County Jail.
