Man Scams Insurance After Lakeville Motorcycle Accident, Charges Say

Maurice Culpepper could spend up to 20 years for the criminal insurance fraud charge.

After a motorcycle accident in Lakeville, a St. Paul man tried to scam an insurance company, charges say.

Maurice Culpepper, 33, is charged with insurance fraud in connection to the incident, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported

In June 2011, Culpepper, 33, was at a red light in Lakeville when a pickup truck hit his motorcycle. The motorcycle and truck did not have any visible damage and police did not respond to the accident, according to the criminal complaint cited in the paper.

Culpepper later tried to scam Geico, the company that insured the truck, by saying that he received 199 treatments to address a back injury over a year-long period. The scam involved a fake company Culpepper is said to have created called U4A-FIT and the attempt to obtain a $43,381 payment.

The Minnesota Commerce Department's Fraud Bureau was involved in the investigation.

If convicted, Culpepper could spend up to 20 years in prison and pay a $100,000 fine.
