Lakeville Police Warn Residents of Recent Phone Scam
Police in other south metro areas are also investigating the phone calls, according to Sgt. John Kornmann, interim police chief.
Lakeville police are advising residents to watch out for the latest phone scam tactic, according to the latest "Breezes" newsletter from the Lakeville Police Department.
In the scam, callers say that a family member is in danger. One victim lost $1,900 after a male caller claimed her son was "being held against his will," and a wire transfer of the money would secure his safe release. She later found out that her son was never in any trouble, according to the report.
Sgt. John Kornmann, Lakeville interim police chief, writes that neither the police nor law enforcement agencies will request bail money over the phone. If residents receive such a call, they should take notes, challenge the caller and report it to the police. "Do not wire the money!" he says.
To contact the Lakeville Police Department, call 952-985-2800. In the case of an emergency call 911.
