What if fire fighters arrived at your home or neighborhood and were delayed in fighting a fire because they needed to search for the fire hydrant? What if, after finding the hydrant, they were again delayed by needing to shovel out the hydrant whole wearing 60 pounds of turnout gear?
“People don’t often think about it, but the minutes you save in the event of a fire are critically important,” said Fire Chief Mike Meyer. “With the recent snowfalls, it is especially important to at least make sure your neighborhood hydrant is cleared of snow enough to be visible from the street.”

Ideally, hydrants should be cleared of snow three feet all around the hydrant so firefighters have enough room to quickly connect a hose.
Firefighters hope that people will pitch in to help shovel out the 3,313 neighborhood hydrants in Lakeville. When you’re out shoveling, please take a few minutes to clear the snow from around the hydrant near your home or business. Those few extra minutes could potentially save a home, or even a life.
