A Busy Time For Lakeville Police

Lakeville Police Chief Thomas Vonhof updates the city on recent law enforcement activity.

(This story is written by Lakeville Police Chief Thomas Vonhof.)

This has been a busy midsummer week at LPD. One of the calls that Sergeant John Kornmann’s dayshift team responded to was an assist to the Dakota County Sheriff’s Department on a report of a small plane that flipped over on the runway at the Airlake Airport.

Upon arriving on the scene, the officers found the plane had flipped over, causing minor  damage and discovered that fortunately no one was injured. Lakeville Fire and Rescue units responded along with Allina paramedics and our officers assisted the DCSO deputies with the scene

FACEBOOK HELPS ID OWNER OF LOST PROPERTY

Officer Mike Katzovitz was attempting to return a lost wallet that was turned in to him after  it was found by a concerned citizen. Officer Katzovitz was unable to locate a phone number for the owner of the wallet who lived in Colorado. Officer Katzovitz found a match for the name on Facebook and left a message for the wallet owner to contact Officer Katzovitz at LPD. A short while later, the wallet owner contacted Officer Katzovitz and confirmed her ownership of the wallet. Arrangements were made to return the wallet to the owner.

NEW EVIDENCE LOCKER INSTALLED

This week Evidence Technician Lori Clemmer oversaw the installation of the final two rolling storage units in the evidence room. The rolling storage units maximize the available storage space in the evidence room allowing the relatively compact physical space to efficiently meet our evidence storage needs today and well into the future. Lori has been with the Police Department for over 22 years and has been responsible for the management of our evidence and property for much of that time.

All of the property is cataloged by a computer bar coding system that facilitates accurate records of stored property as well as quick and easy retrieval of property once there is a disposition on a case.

CHIEF VONHOF ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT

This past Monday afternoon, I announced to all the officers and staff at our Annual LPD meeting that I would be retiring effective October 1, 2013. I have had the privilege of serving Lakeville residents as a Lakeville Police Officer for 33 years and the great honor of leading the men and women of the Lakeville Police Department for almost seven years as the Lakeville Police Chief. Lakeville has been a wonderful community to serve my entire Law Enforcement career in and I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to meet so many outstanding people that we serve in this community. I would be remiss if I did not recognize and thank those men and women of this Law Enforcement Agency, whose hard work and dedication have made this such a successful police department and Lakeville such a safe community.
